Some people claim they intentionally lie about the steel type but I HIGHLY doubt that. My guess is just faulty treatment. The item you are trying to purchase is temporarily out of stock. The photos above are taken after many hours of brutal use. I chopped down every branch of our Christmas tree when I mistakenly thought it would be easier than having to drag the tree down 4 floors and into the street. I ended up with a lot of firewood all over the apartment, a few blisters and a chipped blade (which you don’t see in the photos). The knife otherwise seems to look nicer the more you use it, and my only sadness is the chipping, large enough for me to consider sending it back for a look-see. When you receive this in the mail, it is immediately clear that the Bravo 1 won’t be gathering dust in your gun safe, it is a definite user knife if there ever was one. As you lift it out of its unassuming cardboard box, you’ll notice how heavy it is – the very thick, full tang, convex ground blade really adds heft.

The idea is that the increased toughness of the 3V allows for thinner stock–3/16″ instead of 1/4″–with no real loss in durability. And this point is noteworthy because Bark River in the only company I know of that does something like this–change a design to capture the increased performance of modern steels. You don’t see custom makers running 3V on their designs doing something like this–instead they seem to make their 3V knives even thicker–a waste of both material and design. The last particular feature I needed was the loss of the thumb ramp that comes standard on the Bravo.

If its sharp you can sharpen it. Its not a big deal, but it is a sign that Stewart, et. Second, in a reverse grip that faceted end is actually very comfortable and gives you great purchase on the blade. And third the tip, while scoring sharp, is not so pointy it is brittle. Stewart knows his stuff and even in a Shaker-simple design, he sneaks a few cues in there to tell you “Yeah, mutha fuckas, I know what I am doing.”

CPM 3V is a high toughness, wear-resistant tool steel made by the Crucible Particle Metallurgy process. CPM 3V was designed to provide maximum resistance to breakage and chipping in a high wear-resistance steel. This “super steel” offers impact resistance greater than A2, D2, Cru-Wear, or CPM M4, approaching the levels provided by S7 and other shock resistant grades. CPM 3V offers the highest impact toughness of any tool steel with this range of wear resistance.

We got a call and were asked if we could re-design the Gameskeeper to be the knife they wanted. Tony Sculimbrene is a lawyer and gear-obsessed dad of two who believes a day spent outside is always a good day. He also authors the gear blog Everyday Commentary.

This however would mean a wait time longer than whatever time it takes to get a Barkie shipped to you. Do I like the piece-of-mind and comfort provided by a fixed blade when I am really working hard? At the end of a hard day in the field you can still have an edge sharp enough to harvest wildflowers for your loved one at home. Fixed blade of around 4-5.5” with an ample sized, comfortable handle.

Don’t know as recent fact, but in the past customer service was top notch. Had to send a BlackJack for spa treatment. Never got a bad one in probably 6-7 purchases. It may have changed in the last ten years with the second generation Stewarts being more involved.

They never told any of the manufacturers and bought them online, like any other customer. When all the testing was done there were only two knives left not broken or damaged beyond use. The Bark River Gameskeeper was one of the two. It was totally undamaged in everything these folks did to it. Couple these two things with the great convex grind of a Bark River and you have a winner (and the company’s best seller). The Bark River Bravo 1 is big enough to do real chopping tasks, but not so big that it feels like a splint hanging on your leg.

I got the bravo, but wish I had the LT version now. It’s from when I was newer to Bushcraft. I’m trading it to my buddy though who likes it more. While a lot of reviews and complaints are questionable and might not all be true, there are videos taken inside their facilities showing heat treat ovens that are way too full. I’m sure a lot of them end up with fine HTs, but the percentage of faulty units that result from such practices would be too high for the price Bark Rivers are sold at.

The Bravo Micro is a fantastic little S35VN knife, if you ever decide to venture smaller. Funny enough I was actually reading the thread that started that drama as it was linked in some thread I was in about some steel I was reading about. Turns out the guy who started all the drama, everyone is now peeved at for disappearing with knives undelivered. Im not a regular there and not a knifey as it were, but I see what you mean. I edc a Bravo EDC. Recently picked up an Ed Martin and the difference in finish is very noticeable. I had never had anything as nicely done as that.

The end result, according to the company, is a knife that is just as strong as the non-LT version with better performance. It is one of the few times we see a knife company use a super steel, not just to add a bullet point to the sales sheet, but to actually capture more performance through better technology. I prefer all of the LT versions of Bark River’s blades. And my friend, general knife master, and owner of American Knife Company, Jim Nowka, raves about the Aurora LT. In the fixed blade world, the Bark River Bravo 1 is a Jack-of-All-Trades knife.

Made me rethink purchasing more and my eyes were open for what I could have for similar money. So while I overall have had a favorable experience with them I dont know I could by a new one from them. I’ve had three knives and sold them. Finishing was good, but too thick convex.

Its hard to understate the importance of the Bark River Bravo to both Bark River and the modern production fixed blade market. And so, it is fitting that I review this knife. But with all of the variants out there, both in size and in steel, I waited for a long time for this one, which I think is probably the very best variant they have produced. The steel, 3V, is one of the best hard use steels around, and the LT designation is very important to me–it means there is thinner blade stock for better cutting.

The Iiten Bror, a small version of the Aurora, reviewed below, is not as shinny as it was, but I have never polished it. Great knife, wildly broad selection of scale and grind options. I know the price tag may seem like a little much, but for what you get it’s worth every penny. The knife comes with a no-questions-asked lifetime warranty – you break it or damage it and they will replace it, period. You can also send it back for reconditioning and all it will cost you is postage. When it comes to good quality gear, spend once and cry once.

The convex grind is tough and easy to maintain. If you don’t want that in a hard use knife, you want something other than a hard use knife.
