More recent studies are providing data to suggest that the splitting of the past was justified and the Arctic char species has now been divided into 20 separate species. In Wales, Environment Agency Wales and the Countryside Council for Wales have been working for several years to boost the size of the natural populations by topping up declining stocks. Elsewhere in the world it’s the anadromous migratory char that get really big – our landlocked ones remain rather smaller unfortunately.

Whenever I camp, I’m usually hiking for many days and carrying a small, lightweight, 1-person tent with me. Everything must fit in my 65L backpack, and my bathroom is the great outdoors – no matter the weather. Sassannguit is a small fishing camp owned by Leif and Agathe Fontaine. It is located about 1.5 hours sailing south of Sisimiut, almost right on the Arctic Circle itself. I was keen to fill my freezer with these wild trout, so I booked a fishing weekend at Sassannguit with West Greenland Wildlife.

Bring lots of leaders, the piece of tapered nylon between the line and the fly. Greenland rivers are filled with rocks, and leaders are hard to come by in Greenland. For clear water rivers, it will sometimes be advantageous to use leaders as long as 12 feet. It feels like stepping back in time to when the glaciers just retreated, and the rivers became colonized by fierce strong arctic char. Then they had a change of view and lumped them all back together as a single species. In some waters, when the population drops too low it’s being topped up with fresh stock fish to help maintain the gene pool and keep the species going. It’s possible that some of the Scottish or Irish char might behave like those of Ennerdale Water by swimming up rivers to spawn, but as far as I know it’s not been observed yet. They were also introduced into North Yorkshire’s Grimwith Reservoir and are apparently still found there and in the surrounding rivers (although it’s unfortunately not open to anglers). Scotland is your best bet, as there are 258 Scottish lochs known to hold populations of Arctic char. They’re much rarer elsewhere though, with just eight localities in the English Lake District and four populations in Wales.

Is by far the most fished, and the one that all lodges and camps fish for. It migrates to salt water every summer, and consequently grows bigger than the others. The anadromous morph is silvery in the summer but changes color as spawning time approaches. Clear rivers are very clear and excellent for fly fishing. Of course, too much of a good thing is sometimes tricky.

In some places it is possible to hike to char rivers from town, but hardly any of them are day trips from town. Sollecito and Ouellette took their fly rods and fished around the camp. Arctic char spread on the territory of three continents. It is found in river basins and northern seas of North America, Europe and Asia.

Char water is often quite shallow, gravel-bottomed, and easily waded. When dry fly fishing turns off, streamers and egg patterns round out the char angler’s quiver, and fly rods in the 6-8 wt. That said, a heavy char will make a believer of any 6 wt. Angler, and appropriate reels are necessary for managing the bigger specimens. Inukshuk Lodge accommodates a maximum of 6 rods per week and the season runs from mid-July to late August. You will arrive at the Lodge on Sunday and depart the Lodge the following Sunday.

About Artic Char

Given there were just two of us on this occasion, we each took our own private tent where Leif and Agathe had even set up camp beds for us! I took the tent with the musk-ox skin decoration, Judith the one with the polar bear skin. The Loop Evotec 140 floating fly line is a fly line with a long head that is designed… I would imagine your chances of catching one on a fly were relatively slim in the UK, though you might manage it on one of the Scottish lochs, or at a stillwater where they’re stocked. A bit of fishing for char does still go on in the Scottish lochs and on Windermere. They’re protected in some places so check that you’re allowed to fish for them before trying.

But it will be wise to check the providers specific recommendations for the particular river you will be fishing. Once you have purchased a license there are few restrictions on fly-fishing. There is no privately owned land in Greenland, hence there is no privately owned fishing.

Fly fishing for Arctic Char in the remote northern wilderness is a dream for many fishermen, and with plenty of outfitters willing to take you there, it’s totally doable if you’ve got the will. They spawn in the early fall through early winter, depending on the latitude, with more northern Char spawning earlier. In much of their range, females will spawn once every 2 to 3 years, with the spawning process being less showy than Salmon. In North America, they’re a popular game fish along much of the Quebec and Labrador coast, as well as much of Alaska. They’re fairly aggressive, and will eagerly take baits in shallow water – making wading and fly-fishing popular methods of landing them. While it might not get the same level of attention as its more famous Salmon and Trout cousins, Arctic Char are a prized species in their own right – and deserve a closer look.

Muddy Rivers

Be mindful of your shadow when fishing in shallower water, as they can get spooked by your presence if you’re overly aggressive. As they tend to congregate in shallow water, be on the lookout for gravelly, shallow-bottomed, waters. They have a varied diet – so they’ll take a variety of different flies.

The dog nobbler hook has been a bit in and out of production since I took to using it, so I buy a bunch of them whenever I can find them. Some tiers bend the standard streamer hook a bit to make it into a dog nobbler hook. Arctic char , or Bleikja in Icelandic, is a member of the Salmonidae family and it is the most widespread freshwater fish species found in Iceland. It inhabits a wide range of habitats from lakes and small mountain streams to roaring glacier rivers, but throughout its habitat, it requires cold, clean water. They are eager takers, and generally congregate in shallow waters, so anglers often have good luck wading through the water and catching them. Like many other Alaska fish, Arctic char are aggressive and strong, so they make for a challenging yet exciting fly fishing experience. Char are anadromous by nature, and in Nunavut they spend their summers in the Arctic Ocean and Hudson Bay before venturing upriver to spawn and overwinter.
