This is an easy countour, over toMitchell Point Trail #417 for access to Warren Lake. Driving through the national forest can get challenging due to numerous routes and seasonal road closure. Thankfully, you can download a map for your smartphone through the Avenza map app available for iOS and Android. There is plenty of wildlife to spot in the national forest. Look for coyotes, fox, raccoons, mule deer, bobcats, mountain lions, and black bears.

Devil’s Peak Lookout remains open to the public, but has been out of service for over 25 years. From the Lookout, continue southeast for 1.2 miles to the southern trailhead at Kinzel Lake/Sherar Burn Road . Some segments of this trail are primitive with minimal tread surface, which can lead to several scrambles. Encompassing more than one million square acres of pristine backcountry, the Mount Hood National Forest is one of the truly exceptional wilderness destinations in the western United States. A bridge will NOT be installed allowing access to Ramona Falls.

If you’re visiting outside of the open season (5/15), make sure to check the current conditions for accessibility. From Estacada, travel east on Highway 224 for approximately 26 miles, then keep right onto Highway 46 for approximately 2 miles to the campground. Sites are equipped with tables and campfire rings with grills. Firewood is available for purchase at or near the campground. If you can’t make a reservation or are going on a spontaneous trip, camping on the side of the lake opposite of the campground is great. And it’s free as long as you have the forest pass.

The Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness is one of the most scenic areas of the forest, which features 2,290 miles of hiking trails scattered across six separate mountain ranges. And if you’re in the area, a trip to the nearby hard-drinking cowboy town of Livingston is an absolute must. An often-overlooked natural alternative that frequently border national parks, national forests tend to have less restrictions, larger acreage, and far less visitation.

Although the whole area is unique, several local landmarks are remarkably beautiful and popular. Mount Hood dominates the surrounding forest with its easily recognizable snow-capped mountain peak. Alpine Campground is not operated by Hipcamp and can only be booked externally.

Timothy Lake

Mt Hood National Forest encompasses eight unique Wilderness areas as well as multiple barrier freeaccessible sites to explore. The historic Timberline Lodge is another great option for visitors to the area. Originally built in 1937, the lodge retains much of its unique charm and character today. Amenities include comfortable rooms, fine dining and a bar, a swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, and more. If sleeping in a tent isn’t your cup of tea, but you’d still like to stay inside the national forest, consider renting a cabin instead.

Either way, there is a nice sense of satisfaction knowing that you’re standing on the highest point in the entire state of Oregon. A long gravel spur leads to a logged out area carpeted with huckleberry bushes-back in or pull in only. The Warm Springs tribes request that visitors not pick the berries as this is a tradition berry picking area for them.

Each site is equipped with a table and campfire ring with grill. Accessible vault toilets and drinking water are provided, but no hookups are available. A variety of hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding trails can be accessed from the campground, including the historic Barlow Trail. The somewhat primitive, 1-mile trail connects the campground with the town of Government Camp. High on Mount Hood, near the headwaters of the Salmon River, the Alpine Campground is the highest on the Forest.

Most of Nottingham’s 23 campsites are right next to the East Fork of the Hood River. It’s also a popular campground and reservations are recommended. There is no water available so be sure to bring some. Listen to a chorus of frogs most evenings while camping at one of the 33 campsites at Frog Lake campground.

Nearby Activities

Just make sure you know what the hell you’re doing before pitching the tent. Anytime you’re in a location that includes wilderness areas named after both Ansel Adams and John Muir, you know you’re gonna see some sights. Such is the understatement of the century in central California’s Sierra National Forest, wedged between the much busier Yosemite and Kings Canyon National Parks. To access the road – from the intersection of US 26 and Highway 35, drive northeast on Highway 35 for 7.8 miles. Make a left turn at the sign for Elk Meadows Trailhead then turn left onto the original road.

Some first-come, first-served sites are available, as well as some fully accessible sites. Parking surfaces are mostly paved, but some are gravel. Also, just next to the campground, is the trail head to Tamanawas Falls — a great hike, easily enjoyed by people of all skills and ages.

Several of the campsites are right on the river, and the beautiful areas that the river has etched is fun to explore. This trail accesses the west side of the Mount Hood Wilderness from the Lolo Pass Area. Qualities of the trail itself include wildflowers in June and huckleberries in late August. This ½ mile access trail is a short, forested trail heavily used as an access route to the Timberline Trail #600 and the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail #2000.

More than 10,000 climbers a year come seeking the top of the state, making Mount Hood’s summit the most visited snow covered peak in America. All climbing routes on Mt Hood are technical, including the “easier” southside climbing route, with crevasses to cross, falling rocks, and often inclement weather. In the summer, visitors enjoy hiking through the high alpine scenery. Once there, however, you should be prepared for a long walk in the forest. Actually, the total length of the loop is 7.1 miles or about 11.4 km. Along the banks of the river you can find beautiful small beaches, which are a really good opportunity to refresh yourself in the water on hot summer days.
