Big Bear Campgrounds First Come First Serve

Be sure to pack-in/pack-out all your items as no trash service is available. The Big Bear Discovery Center is the home base for everything wilderness related to Big Bear. You can find all the answers to any camping related questions you have by calling or visiting the Discovery Center.

Trout are a popular catch amid the calm flow of the water. Boating is also an excellent pastime, as the river is perfect for floating, rafting and canoeing. Big Creek Campground is just 2 miles from the Camas Creek entrance to the Glacier National Park. Columbia Falls, along the North Fork of the Flathead River, is located 19 miles south of the campground. Big Creek Campground has 22 campsites, 12 of which are reservable and 10 are walk-up, first come, first serve sites.

There are ten group campgrounds located around Big Bear. Your large group can have the entire campground to itself. Yellow Post and Dispersed are undeveloped areas where camping is allowed. Some will have fire rings and maybe a picnic table, but really nothing else as far as creature comforts are concerned. Mountain Biking – Big Bear is synonymous with world class biking trails and several professional mountain bikers call Big Bear home because of this.

If you are tent camping to reserve the outside spots on the south loop if you are looking for the best tent sites. Holcomb Valley campground is located at 7,400 feet elevation about six miles north of Big Bear Lake. After once, the valley was named a famous gold mining area after Bill Holcomb, a grizzly bear hunter.

If you are looking for fun adrenaline adventure on a clear day, Snow Summit’s famous Sky Chair will bring you to the top of the breathtaking mountain views and fast downhill trails. For winter access take Polique Canyon Road when Van Dusen Canyon Road is closed for winter. From Fawnskin, continue on North Shoe Drive/Hwy 38 to Polique Canyon Road. Make a left, Polique Canyon Road becomes Forest Service Road 2N09. Holcomb Valley Campground will be on your left hand side.

Horse Springs Campground

Designated Accessible sites are usually reserved for people with disabilities who have a vehicle displaying an accessible parking placard or license plate. Especially as the crowds begin to swell, your smaller footprint may be able to get up and into some of these spaces before the big rigs steal all the good spots.

Each year, more than 250,000 people visit the center. Consider this the hub of “all things camping” in Big Bear. Big Bear in Southern California is a popular outdoor recreation spot where Big Bear Lake and Big Bear Mountain are located. Hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, fishing and boating are all popular activities that draw travelers and campers here.

Is Dispersed Camping Allowed In Angeles National Forest?

Visitors to Big Bear enjoy a variety of activities and scenic places to visit. Those who are camped at Big Pine Flat Campground have only a short drive to the lake. Big Pine Flat Campground is in the San Bernardino National Forest, 8 miles northwest of Fawnskin and Big Bear Lake. Holloway’s Marina is also home to the Pirate Ship Tour so you can set sail for a 90-minute adventure aboard the Time Bandit. Visitors enjoy the ample fishing and floating opportunities provided by the river.

The camp office includes a laundry room and a convenience store. Serrano is the largest campground in Big Bear, and borders the nearby “Meadows Edge” lakefront picnic area. At an elevation of 7,000 feet, and centrally located on the south side of Big Bear Lake near Bear Village and is a short walk to the Snow Summit Chair lift. A secluded sunny and dry campground with great climbing and a rustic feel down a dirt road.

Big Pine Flat has 19 campsites for tents, trailers, motorhomes and RVs. The campground is about 5 miles away from Big Bear Lake and tucked away in a secluded area of the San Bernardino National Forest. The campground is set among a forest of large pine trees.

The Campground is the only national forest campground in the area with showers. Excellent hiking is nearby with the trailhead for the Cougar Crest Trail is across the street. Heart Bar Family Campground, found 30 minutes away from Big Bear Lake, has 89 campsites for both tents and RVs.

Most Popular Camping States

Located on Forest Road 3n14, 7 miles NW from Fawnskin, the campground is relatively remote. Big Pine Flat is the further campground from the lake and the longest drive down a dirt road. Camping in the backcountry is my favorite place to camp. You can find sites that possibly people have never set foot on before.

This busy campground fills up often throughout the summer. Amenities include vault toilets and potable water from well hand pump. All sites are suitable for tent and small trailer use. Camp under a forest of pine trees at Hanna Flat Campground.

A fire permit is required for any type of flame–including stoves–at these spots, and it’s subject to current fire conditions. Some of the spots are first-come, first-served and others can be reserved. The ones closest to Big Bear Lake are known as the Coon Creek Yellow Post sites, and all 19 of these are indeed first-come, first-served.

Public Camping

Both flush toilets and showers are found at this California campground. Found on the north side of Big Bear Lake is Serrano Campground. With over 90 single sites and 16 double sites, this campground is the largest campground in Big Bear and a great option for those wanting to explore the Big Bear Lake area. To ensure a spot at Serrano Campground, reservations can be made in advance, which is a good idea during busy weekends and holidays. RV campers will be pleased to know that Serrano Campground does have hookups and a dump station. Mountain bikers will enjoy the fact that the Alpine Pedal Path actually runs through the Serrano Campground.

Earn Money Renting Your Rv

The small, remote campground is composed of 11 sites, all first come, first served. Campsites are set in a cluster of juniper and pine trees in a high desert environment. The San Bernardino National Forest is a massive situation, blanketing over three-quarters of a million Californian acres. The forest serves up free camping via a relatively unique concept they call “yellow post” camping, essentially metal pipes sticking out of the ground, numbered and painted yellow.

According to Weather.com, January is typically the coolest month, averaging 47° for the high and 21° for the low. July is typically the warmest month with daytime highs of 81° and nighttime lows of 41°. A typical winter season can bring more than 100″ of snowfall. Summers are mildly warm and dry with an ever present possibility of Summer mountain thunderstorms, especially later in the season. If you don’t mind a little snow, camping in Big Bear year around is available.

Horseback riding – Located in Big Bear City, Baldwin Lake Stables & Petting Zoo offers year-round horseback riding tours for all ages. Explore Big Bear valley’s east end on one and two hour tours or longer three hour and half day ventures. And, don’t forget to stop at the petting zoo with the kids. Off-roading – There are numerous, well marked, roads and trails open for dirt bikes, ATV’s and OHV’s in Big Bear.
