Large group camping is available at Lake Glendale Recreation Area, please contact the Lake Glendale Concessionaire.Equestrian camping is allowed at Johnson Creek and Camp Cadiz campgrounds. The campsites have either water and electric or offer no hookups, depending on what you need. The sites are shady areas with a picnic table and grill for each site.

Discounts are given for campers who plan to stay for a week or more. The campground is located 7 miles south of Carbondale. We arrived at 3pm on a Friday during May and half the sites were already taken. We settled into site #2 which is fairly secluded with one campsite next door but separated by vegetation and 2 sites across the road but separated by a decent distance. A developed canopy of tall pines provided plenty of shade. Site #12 would have been our first choice for seclusion but we were pleasantly surprised by the seclusion at #2.

Other sites that were available did not suit our fancy and so, since there was plenty of daylight left, we moved on. Since there are plenty of other reviews, just wanted to add that there is great Verizon signal here also. We offer the best Cabin rentals in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest! Our cabins are perfect for hosting family getaways, weekend retreats or just time away.

Turn Left onto Illinois 10 and continue for around 1 mile. Finally, turn left onto Garden of the Gods Road and look for the recreation area to your left. In addition to the outdoor activities, you’re also minutes away from the town square, the historic jail museum, Artisan shops, art galleries and restaurants. For day trips, head to Shawnee National Forest or follow the Southern Illinois Antique Trail. What’s great about this campsite is that they do have a swimming pool, so you don’t need to leave the campsite if you want to cool off.

Clean up all personal garbage and make sure all fires are completely out.

Totaling about 10% of the forest, or 30,000 acres, the wildernesses contain some of the most beautiful but rugged and remote areas of the forest. No permits are required to enter or camp in designated wilderness, but there are special restriction for these areas .
