Modern toilets and showers can be found within walking distance. Worthington State Forest offers challenging hiking trails and beautiful views in a state that is otherwise mostly flat. It sits right on the border of Pennsylvania so you can actually spend the day hiking in both states if you like. You can hike in this state park as well but you won’t have a whole lot of options. There are nine marked trails throughout the park, but they add up to less than 10 miles. The one redeeming factor when it comes to hiking is that many of the trails do provide beautiful views of the lakes.

Guests can rent a kayak to explore the area, go hiking through the National Wildlife Refuge or head to Cape May County Park and Zoo close by. RV hook-ups and tent sites are available, as well as rental cottages, each of which sleeps six persons. Each cottage features a well-equipped kitchen and dining area, a patio for outdoor living and cable TV in the living area for entertainment. Acorn Campground is located in Green Creek, New Jersey, a short drive from Cape May and its beaches, Wildwoods and Stone Harbor. The campground can accommodate tents and RV’s up to a 40-foot (12-meter) fifth-wheel.

There are 85 peaceful wilderness campsites that can only be accessed by boat or by foot; vehicles and trailers are not permitted. All sites are equipped with a fire ring, and pit toilets and drinking water can be found within easy walking distance. The campsites are open between the beginning of April and the end of October, and campers are required to check in no later than 4 p.m.

You may also need to save some energy to backpack to your camping destination as some of the sites can only be accessed by hiking to them. If you want to get out of the tent, you can opt to rent one of the ten furnished cabins, but you’ll have to rent it for a full week during the busy months of summer. The Appalachian Trail runs through the forest and on top of this, they have an additional 33 miles of marked trails you can use. These trails can be challenging but they offer some great views of the surrounding areas. The Spruce Run Recreation Area is known for its reservoir as well as its access to hiking trails.

Nearby Attractions

Some are situated in areas catering to fun beachside activities, like outdoor concerts and opportunities for recreational sports, while others are more secluded and ideal for a calmer crowd. Since camping is strictly prohibited on some beach land throughout the state, it’s important to get an idea beforehand of where campers can and can’t access space. Cape May KOA Resorts is located in Cape May, New Jersey, a 5 mi drive from Cape May beaches and a 15-minute drive from Wildwood Boardwalk and all its attractions. Some fun things to do include kayaking and fishing, and there are basketball courts and tennis courts on the property.

I did try to pitch a couple tents out there once at which point the park ranger asked us to drop them because you can’t sleep out there, only fish. Island Beach State Park is one of my favorite beaches on the East Coast. Just be creative/don’t have it out in the open and you will be fine.

An Adirondack getaway that will take you off of the grid, you’ll find plenty of peace and quiet out here in the tiny town of Inlet. The Limekiln Lake Campground has over 250 campsites, many of which can be found right on the shores of the lake. The campground is a family-favorite, putting you close to fun attractions like a waterpark, swimming spots, nature trails and other outdoor adventures. One of the only parks in New Jersey that permits wilderness camping, Round Valley Reservoir is an excellent destination for anyone interested in fishing, hiking, hunting, and scuba diving.

Dorothy is a small community inland from the shore, but it’s also just a short and easy drive to the water and all that Atlantic City has to offer. Compared to all the other RV parks in South Jersey, New Jersey, Country Oaks offers the most for avid swimmers and others who enjoy being near the water. Just 10 miles from the Atlantic beaches, this resort has a full plate of amenities from which to choose. Swimming, lounging in the hot tub, or sitting around the campfire are just a few. An all-ages RV park, Long Beach RV Resort & Campground features a ture walk, tent and cabin rentals, and an 18-hole mini-golf course. The camping areas are open from April 1st to October 31st and you’ll be able to choose from one of 67 tent and trailer sites.
