These primitive camping sites are reached by traveling over gravel logging roads and generally share the same characteristics of the sites described above. State parks allow for many special recreational activities such as bicycling events, marathons, photo tours, kite-flying contests, club meetings, etc. However, all such events must be held under a Special Activity Permit. At Jockey’s Ridge State Park, sandboarding and kiteboarding are allowed without a permit. Coastal state park cabins and yurts, like this one at Umpqua Lighthouse State Park, near Reedsport, have yet to reopen in the pandemic. After COVID cancellations and closures, the state park system is persevering for next year—but needs some time to heal.
