That is when he discovers Nathaniel Ayers, a mentally ill, homeless street musician who possesses extraordinary talent, even through his half-broken instruments. Inspired by his story, Lopez writes an acclaimed series of articles about Ayers and attempts to do more to help both him and the rest of the underclass of LA have a better life. However, Lopez’s good intentions run headlong in the hard realities of the strength of Ayers’ personal demons and the larger social injustices facing the homeless. Regardless, Lopez and Ayers must find a way to conquer their deepest anxieties and frustrations to hope for a brighter future for both of them.

Between The Soloist and his previous effort, Atonement, Wright continues to prove he is an immensely talented director. Teamed up with Atonement cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, they end up creating some beautiful shots, like the refraining depictions of the printing press at work, reminiscent of the typewriter-heavy soundtrack of Atonement. Unfortunately, the printing press refrain doesn’t really go anywhere.

Nevertheless, their love for him will always be mixed with fear, fear of his emotional storms and physical explosions, fear of his vulnerability and fragile hold on activities of daily living that most of us take for granted. Ashley McBryde really deserved at least one piece of hardware for her album Never Will, a potent blend of outlaw sensibility and pop sheen. While she didn’t pick up any tonight, she did show why she deserved the recognition with a fiery performance of “Martha Divine” — right in the middle of the Cumberland River, no less.
Later, while they all watch an orchestra, Lopez ponders how beneficial their friendship has been. Ayers still hears voices, but at least he no longer lives on the streets. In addition, Ayers has helped improve Lopez’s relationship with his own family. He also tries to talk Ayers into getting an apartment, but Ayers refuses.

Guyton shined the entire night, from her fabulous outfit changes as host to her performance of “Hold On,” one of the standouts of the night. The Lopez character is anguished and filled with foreboding; even knowing he has the best of intentions, Steve is never sure of how to use the power he has acquired over Nathaniel’s life.
Nothing being perfect in an imperfect world, as “adult” entertainment, “The Soloist” did not once insult my intelligence. I marveled at the complexity of the screenplay and the realization of it by its gifted director and the camera-work of Seamus McGarvey. The gifted Dario Marianelli is credited as the film’s composer, anecdotally, in the gigantic shadow of Ludwig van Beethoven. Mental illness, genius, homelessness, journalism and music has rarely been so well presented as an “entertainment.” Yes, Mr. Ayers is depicted as experiencing a “light show” when attending a rehearsal of the L. At least we didn’t see pink hippopotamus in tutus or dinosaurs on a rampage in a prehistoric setting.
But a deserved one, and a fitting tribute to the late country and pop mastermind producer busbee, who died from brain cancer in fall 2019. However, “They’re Calling Me Home” marks her first Grammy as a solo artist. The Soloist begins when a reporter named “Steve Lopez” (Robert Downey, Jr.) meets a homeless man named “Nathaniel Ayers” . Steve writes a column, so he’s always on the prowl for human interest stories, and something about Nathaniel piques his curiosity. He does some research and submits his copy, and soon one “Nathaniel column” leads to another, drawing Steve inexorably into the grim details of Nathaniel’s troubled life.
When Ayers witnesses an orchestra at work, the film boldly enters an extended sequence depicting his Fantasia-like synesthesia with flashing, waving lights moving to the sound of the music. Foxx’s Nathaniel Ayers is the bane of the film, a fatal flaw considering that he’s the subject of the damned thing. Foxx isn’t to blame — he plays quirkily crazy great but stops being believable when he’s required to be tearily dramatic — but the film often plays him for laughs by having him dressed in a mélange of Halloween leftovers. To suddenly cut from one scene to Foxx dressed in an Uncle Sam costume with white pancake makeup on his face only works to reduce the character to a joke in what’s meant to be an Important Issue Film. It’s a touching Issue Film about the state of homelessness in Los Angeles. It’s based-on-a-true-story dramatic fodder for Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx to act at until a Golden Statue lands in their hands.
In an era where studios release all their quality films in the same 10 week time period–I call it the Oscar demolition derby–Paramount has decided to create some breathing room for its strongest contender. Only in Oscar-crazed Hollywood, where everyone lives and dies by awards glory, is the decision to move a quality movie to the spring viewed as an ignominious death sentence. If “The Soloist” gets a good reception in March, it will survive and flourish. I wish some of the industry’s hand-ringers would realize there is actually life after the Oscars.
