The Dragontail is designed to provide stable support and a snug fit. This should provide an extremely good technical last for climber/hikers. The shoe also features an enhanced heel cushioning and stability thanks to the PU insert. The Dragontail is equipped with a Vibram Maton outsole that has a specialized “Mount” double compound in the toe and heel strike area to ascend and descend with confidence.

As a bonus, these shoes have excellent design and really stand out from the crowd. Just look at those slick orange heels above, these are unforgettable shoes. Learn more about the technologies integrated into footwear by licensed manufacturers, and how they help create hiking boots, waterproof shoes, lightweight shoes, and other footwear. One benefit of using traditional materials such as thick, full-grain leather is that the outer material is highly resistant to abrasion. Hardly any hiking shoes these days will last as long as this pair from Garmont.

And in fact I would say this is exactly like a hiking boot without the ankle support. It’s a little heavier than your regular approach shoe and just a little lighter than most day hikers. Blending traditional all-leather construction with modern waterproof and breathable technology, this Pyrenees boot from KEEN is built to keep your foot dry and comfortable over long days and rough miles. European styling conceals a KEEN.DRY membrane that seals out precipitation while allowing moisture to escape.

With breathable clothing and footwear made with our product technologies, including waterproof breathable jackets and breathable shoes, moisture vapor from sweat can escape. These boots are incredibly waterproof, from wet and rainy days and through creek crossings. At one point I had them almost completely submerged for several minutes and had no leaks. While the GORE-TEX lining boasts that it is breathable, these boots are not. On longer hikes I was constantly swapping my socks trying to keep my feet as dry as possible. I think there is a full length nylon shank to provide for some stiffness.

This concludes my Garmont Zenith GTX boot Test Series. I would like to thank Garmont and BackpackGearTest for providing me with this testing opportunity. Finally, a five-day, four-night trip in the Sangre De Cristo Mountains in late summer. Elevation ~13,000 ft with somewhere around 5,300 ft gain from the base. Here it also rained every day at 4-6 PM like clockwork. Suitable for women to buy time hiking or sightseeing along nature.

The Sticky Stone GTX on the other hand is tailored for dry to wet environments. It features a GORE-TEX finish and a water repellent suede on the upper. So if your outing involves snowmelt, rain, or crossing the occasional stream, the Sticky Stone GTX is your better bet. This said I’ve gotten both shoes pretty wet on hikes , and they both dry exceptionally fast for an outdoor shoe.

These boots, overall, are comfortable, but best for shorter jaunts in the rough. Inside the boots are a pair of insoles that are stamped with “CCS “. They are a part of Garmont’s footbed design which is supposed to help with breatheability and moisture management. I shall see about this, because my feet sweat quite a bit. The rubber from the sole also comes up onto the very front of the toe to form a bumper to protect the toes. The Garmont Drangontail proved to be extremely durable in our testing phase. The upper is built with 1.8 mm water-repellent suede so in the event of moisture you will notice water whisking away from the outside of the shoes. The Vibram Maton outsole is extremely impressive and really held up throughout some rigorous hikes in the Rocky Mountains.

The distance traveled was probably around 20 mi total for the three days we were there. The tubular nylon laces run through a combination of eyes, nylon loops, and two sets of lace hooks at the top. The laces run across the forefoot at a bit of an angle which Garmont calls the “Asymmetrical Closure System “. The lacing crosses the foot at an angle that is supposed to be similar to the toe joints which is supposed to help the boot flex in conjunction with the toes creating less stress on the toes. This is an interesting feature, and I am excited to see if it does create a notable difference. The Garmont Zenith Mid GTX were delivered to me in their retail box.

What does this mean for you if you’re trying to decide between the two? Essentially the Sticky Cloud is a more breathable, dry environment shoe. If it’s going to be a hot, sunny day, you’ll want to opt for the Sticky Cloud. The 3D mesh design increases breathability as it is tailored for maximum venting for the user. I decided to stop, sit down, drink some water and admire my surroundings for a bit. Just then, a pair of Mountain Chickadees landed nearby, chirping away.

Women’s Garmont Hiking Trail Shoes Size 5 F

Comfort around the apartment is one thing, but now it is time to take them into the trenches, through the muddy washes and down the trail. The toe of the Zenith is covered with a rubber toe rand to help protect the toe tips and add durability to the boots. It looks to be glued on and I could not find any loose spots around the edges of either boot.

Garmont and Vibram got most things right with this sole, there’s very little that needs to be improved. There’s just the right amount of lugs to give traction when hiking, even in loose-on-hardpack trails. I had them out on full hardpack, loose on hardpack, and sandy trails. I was happy with performance across all conditions and didn’t experience any slipping, even when taking big downhill steps while under load. The Garmont Sticky Stone GTX Approach Shoes live up to its name.

They came in excellent condition, and smell like new boots which is a smell I love. They are what I expected after viewing the boots on the Garmont website listed above, and just recently retiring a previous model of Garmont boots. The Zeniths are part of Garmont’s Trail Sport line, and for the style of hiking I do and the loads I carry, they will have their work cut out for them. The one caveat I have with these boots is that they are too warm to wear in more moderate weather, above freezing. They’re great for very cold weather, but their Gore-tex liner and 400g thinsulate insulation make then too hot to wear in warmer weather. Vibram wrapped outsole for added grip and foot protection.

These shoes take a very long time to dry out once wet, so treating them early and often is recommended. Traction is another arena in which the Dragontail MNT GTX excels. The thick lugs on the outsole allow this shoe to kick through mud and snow with ease, and smear on rock thanks to the sticky Vibram rubber compound. With the stiff sole, we even feel like a pair of light aluminum crampons can be paired with this shoe for added security on short sections of firm snow, as often encountered on early season hiking trips.
