Motorcycle Forward Controls Vs Mid Controls

6 min read

Here’s everything you need to know about Motorcycle Forward Controls Vs Mid Controls. Find all the information it in this article.

It’s really a matter of comfort for some, like me w/new hips, or the feeling of control for others. Try ’em both to see what fits you best. However on the Hwy I do like stretching out to my forwards and really don’t see any control issues when I do.

At first, it felt like I was going to fall at every god-damn stop light. Eventually, I got used to it and figured out how to better control my motorcycle. You might be sold on the benefits of the forward controls for your motorcycle, but stop for a second before you rush in and spend a couple of Benjamins on them. Some forward controls are way forward and way low and don’t even have folding pegs, those ones suck. Grind off your heels and/or stick a peg while trying to turn/lean.

They can also be used to adjust the ergonomics of your motorcycle if necessary, as in the case of a tall rider using a small bike. I like both mids and forwards and could go either way. The people who say how forwards don’t allow them to stand up when going over bumps, slam gears, control the bike in turns etc. baffle me.

My Dyna convertible has both and any time I’ve tried using the mid pegs my hips cramp almost immediately. That is what I will do if I don’t get used to the forwards. It’s how I have my Fatboy set up, and I have done some real long days in the saddle on that bike. Instead of wasting money on a B-day party, JOhn bought his pearl-black cruiser. With it, he has made over 25,000 clicks. From running empty in the middle of nowhere, low-sidding it in corners, performing carburetor overhaul on the road, to upgrading it with custom 3D printed parts, JOhn has done it all.

Understanding How Motorcycle Forward Controls Work

Like all above when I want or need an increased level of control I am on the mids. Mid-Mounts – offer marginally better control, but how much this means to every day riding depends on the amount of sporting riding you do. Of course, for longer distance the ability to move between highway pegs and mid-mounts can increase comfort.

The forward pegs, for me, weren’t any more comfortable… I found the seating arrangement kind of awkward and unnatural, but the bike looks cool. My standard peg bike seems like a more natural seating arrangement when riding, but with the taller seat and the footpegs mid-bike, moving the bike a round the garage is a pain.

Further Forward Mid

What I think is funny are the guys with drag bars and fowards that bend themselves into a big “C” shape while riding… Speaking of the seat; I need to order a gel pad to install under the leather on the solo seat as it lacks padding which I was concerned could be an issue. I really hope they fit the Bobber I think they are the best looking ones out there and would love a set.

I can easily use my forwards to stand up over bumps, can slam the heck outta the gears, and can man handle the bike in curves. Sure, the mids might be a little better for handling etc. but the forwards ain’t hurting me much. I actually like how they are out of the way when I have my feet down at a light or when I want to launch the bike from a dig. At the end of the day they both rock IMO, just depends on what works/feels right for the rider. I bought a 2015 Dyna low rider last July and could not get comfortable with mid controls.

What are the pro’s and con’s of both forward controls and mid controls? I added mid controls around the holidays. I totally agree that it rides like a different bike. 5’ 7” with a 29” inseam I no longer feel that my legs are so stretched for the foot controls.

And swapping out my handle bars for a pull-back bar. I think I was worrying too much about how I look on the bike instead of how I feel. I wanted to be confortable, but my wife took a picture and I look like a stick figure riding (I’m tall, skinny, and was riding with a perfectly straight back). I find myself starting to slump and thats when my back hurts. Is this something my back will become accustomed to or should I be sitting straight up? I feel like when I look at other riders, their back seems arched.

Before researching and writing this article, I didn’t even know what are forward controls on a motorcycle, nor did I know I had them and used them. I’m riding for 8 years straight, and I felt ashamed I didn’t know one of the BASIC motorcycle parts. There’s nothing quite like the freedom of the open road that you can enjoy on the back of a motorcycle. The rush of the wind, the hum of the motor, and the wide-open panoramic view simply represent one of the grandest ways that you can travel on the highway. A road trip on the back of a motorcycle can make traveling through the most mundane stretch of highway into a true adventure. It’s easy to see why for cycling enthusiasts, taking a road trip on the back of a bike is the best way to travel.

As previously stated, mids give you greater control. Going to need to swap out the stock mirrors too as I can’t see as well as I could before I swapped the seat. Looking at some Puig racing mirrors now.

If you have any desire to wick things up in a sporting manner, you will want to keep the mid controls. Weighting the inside foot peg while cornering has a significant effect in getting the bike to turn more quickly. Personally I HATE forwards, both from a look and feel standpoint, for ME they detract from the sportyNESS of a bike. Not to mention on longer rides I prefer to be able ot move my feet around and not lock into a single position. I took a photo during the install with both controls in place – can’t believe how far back it moved my foot. I like the feel of the standard position better than the cruiser position.

My legs would cramp up on longer rides. My second bike and my current Scout Bobber 60 had forward controls. Bone, don’t get too caught up with the term “man-handling”, perhaps a bad choice of words on my part there. Someone who knows how to ride properly can handle the heck out of a Sportster whether it has forwards or mids at least IMO. I wish I had two Sporties with one of each because I really like both and they both have pros/cons.

Getting Used To Forward Controls Vs Always Having Mids

I have scraped the Sportster’s muffler, but haven’t touched a peg down yet, thinking the forwards sit higher. Granted the Super Low’s lack of clearance restricts the lean angle but promotes a higher skill level to go faster. However that level of effort changes a lot with body position. The Sportster was a sport bike when it was introduced…it was built to be competition for the Brit twins of the era. It lost that title in the very early 70’s, as the Japanese multis came on the scene and were refined.

If I sit straight, then my arms are bent pretty decent. I have actually been looking at windscreens. I think I would like the superfly from the Hammer, though. Coming from a sport bike, wind is not an issue with me. I feel like the only way to hold myself up is by squeezing the bars and “pulling” myself forward. After my first 20 minutes highway ride, my lower back was slightly burning.
