Tie the cord to your ski, ski pole, or ice axe and the tent wall will behave a lot better than in some photos. The striped gray panels under the poles are magical in that they are translucent and let starlight in. In the dead of night you can “see” inside the tent by the light coming in through the gray panels. In a fullish moon, the tent is almost too bright to sleep.

It doesn’t offer anything exceptional as far as strength goes but it is spacious, has long dimensions, and is a good option for taller folks. The Outpost is mediocre at dealing with heavier snow loads and is truly a softer 4-season design. It’s effective at keeping its occupants dry in the pouring rain, but if it snows more than six inches and there are significant winds, you’ll want to frequently knock off access snow. It will also be beneficial to spend extra time ensuring the guylines are taught. This tent is a very specific tool, for very specific purposes.

Grocery store plastic bags buried in the sand have been useful snow/sand anchors on some occasions…your mileage may vary. Tough, durable, easy to assemble, and the price is right. It’s also been praised for its ability to minimize condensation build up over night.

The Direkt 2 has one small pocket that hangs from the rear roof. We like this location better than the Firstlight’s side location because it’s easier to find in the night. Even better, the Direkt’s pocket can be removed. Just unhitch the toggle to save a tiny bit of weight. Overall, the Direkt 2 is stronger and more weather resistant than the Firstlight.

Review Summary

The tent would also benefit from a gear loft . The EV2 is an exceptional tent which has a very specific and limited scope of intended use. This is not really a desirable tent to own unless you have some advanced mountaineering experience and intend on spending significant time at high altitude venues. It’s designed for use by professional mountaineers and those interested in pursuing extended activities at high elevations, in general. A few years ago I camped in Koke’e State Park, above Waimea Canyon on Kauai, and on New Years Eve the rain ultimately angled at about 80° to the ground with sustained winds of 30+mph.

Ahh, always a good challenge and eveyone does it differently…. Right as I got it I was impressed with the weight, very light and even in its stuff sack it is very compact. Any updates on how these have been working out for people? I picked one up for a decent price last night but could still return it…. Lightweight – If we had put 2 men in there, each person would have barely anything to carry.

Weight

The stuff sack that comes with the tent is way too large. I think it they made it so long so that you can get the poles in the bag too. Get one 75% of the size or cut down the original one.

Snow Port – There is a watertight snow port in the floor, which is basically an exit point for accumulated frost and snow. It has an integrated vestibule, so you actually have somewhere to store your gear if you decide to go backpacking instead of car camping. It pitches beautifully in a heartbeat, even when you’re alone, and the wind is grabbing every inch of the tent it possibly can. It stays upright and secure in winds from every direction (the wind turned 90 degrees during the night — not the slightest problem!). I am from New England and had set it up in some of the worst weather New Hampshire can throw at it. High winds, driving snow, and freezing temperatures.

Spindrift or rain with a bit of wind could be a problem as the mesh on the tent sides are a little exposed. For most circumstances this is a great choice . New floor material — The floor material is now 70D Nylon 190T Taffeta 10000mm Ether type PU/SIL, increasing in density and potentially strength from the previous canopy of 40D nylon. An avid backpacker, I’ve searched long and hard to find a tent to meet my needs.

The Ghost UL2 is cozy for two and we hope you like your tent-mate. I’ve had my Hammerhead for almost two years and I absolutely love its room, easy setup and ability to shrug off anything Mother Nature throws its way. Seams between zippers and tent material have ripped in numerous places.

Brand: Mountain Hardwear

The fly is not attached and set up in a storm would get the inner tent wet . Easy and REPRODUCIBLE set up are strong pluses, as is the light weight. Severe rain or mountain weather might be a little dicey, but for general backpacking this is a great choice. The very small vestibules won’t keep much out of the rain except something the size of boots or a small pack. The most bomber and well constructed is the Hilleberg. The weight on these tents is the higher end of the spectrum, but a Hilleberg is what I want for potentially serious weather.

We had to cook inside because of rain one day. We opened the door and unzippered the upper portion of the vestibule. We got it all to work finally, but i imagine that the tent and vestibule were not designed to work the way we had it. If you use your tent in winter and winds, then you will always have your vestibule, so an integrated one is what you need.

Weather Resistance

It’s barely more than four pounds, but makes no compromises in terms of protection. The EV2 very pretty well for its overall weather resistance and storm worthiness. This is the second lightest product we tested in this review; weighing in at 2 pounds, 7.2 ounces, squeaking in under the NEMO Blaze’s 2 pounds 7.7 ounce weight.

Ease Of Setup

The Mountain Hardwear EV 2 Tent is described as compact, lightweight, and STRONG. I feel bad that my son paid for something that is not as advertised. He had used it while climbing some of the 14ers.

For this reason we’ve found that pitching the tent with the door into the wind is often best. The EV, however, is a single-walled monster, designed to stand up to the worst snow, wind, and alpine storms Mother Nature dares to throw at you. I figured that I would first test out the EV2 in a moderate snow storm before taking it up on a mountain, and I am really glad I did. The tent fabric is very durable, and overall, the tent is put together very well, just as you would expect from Mountain Hardware.

PJ, about your retirement statement; IMO Roger’s correct; if financially possible, get out there now for some day trips or an overnighter . Reproduction without permission is prohibited. Increased Weight — Mountain Hardwear claims the new weight of this model is five ounces more than the older model.

This Mountain Hardwear Alpine Tent Is Easy To Set Up, Yet Sturdy In Strong Winds

Two windows and the translucent TX07 panels let in a tremendous amount of light and allow you to check up on the weather. The EV2 is the cheeriest, most livable single wall tent we’ve tested. This is by far our favorite single wall tent for tall people. We’d certainly rather be forced to spend time in this tent over a Dirkt 2, an Black Diamond Eldorado, or BD Firstlight.
