Stepping up in weight, Feathered Friends’ Eos Down Jacket has been a favorite of ours for years. GearJunkie reports that the Ghost Whisperer sleeping bag will feature 900-fill goose down (RDS-certified, of course) and an outer shell made of lightweight nylon ripstop fabrics. The bags will reportedly be available in two versions, one rated for use in temperatures as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit and the other for 40 degrees. Both versions can reportedly stuff down to incredibly small sizes (just 5 inches by 11 inches for the 40-degree model) and are extremely lightweight. According to reports, the 20-degree version will tip the scales at 1 pound, 13 ounces, while the 40-degree model will weigh just 1 pound, 1 ounce. Other nice features include a no-snag zipper and an ergonomically designed mummy hood for added comfort.

The Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer 20 is a very high quality, and very expensive, lightweight sleeping bag. It pairs top of the line fabric with 900 fill-power down that is hydrophobically treated to resist absorbing water. It also offers superior warmth and comfort, making it our favorite hooded mummy ultralight sleeping bag. The Ghost Whisperer features a no-frills, simplistic design by nature. It has two simple front hand pockets, a lightweight draw cord at the hem to keep the wind out, and a quilted construction to hold the down in place. It also compacts into one of the pockets for an unbelievably small package – great for storage considerations.

Welcome to my site my name is Josh and Nomad Hiker is my passion I love to get out and experience the hiking trails all around me and am preparing for a Triple Crown run in the next few years.

We think it’s best to take a bit of extra care, including stuffing the jacket into its pocket before shoving it into a pack and carrying repair tape when heading out on multi-day trips. Whether or not the extra couple ounces saved are worth it is a decision you’ll have to make, but we were left with an appreciation of how durable such a thin fabric can be. In our wet-weather experiences with the previous Ghost Whisperer, it outperformed the non-hydrophobic down competition, which tended to clump up and feel wet against the skin much quicker after extended rainfall. On a recent trip, we were riding bikes when a snowstorm rolled in and our Feathered Friends Eos (which doesn’t have hydrophobic down) quickly wetted out along the wrists, hood, and collar.

This cozy insulation type offers the best warmth-to-weight ratio on the market and packs down smaller than synthetics for easy storage. Mountain Hardwear accomplishes this impressive warmth by packing 3 ounces of lofty—and responsibly sourced—800-fill-power down into the Ghost Whisperer/2. The aforementioned Arc’teryx Cerium SL has higher-quality down (850-fill) and mixes in synthetic in certain areas, but it’s draftier in windy conditions and falls short in warmth. Stepping up to a jacket like the Feathered Friends Eos gets you premium 900-fill—and more of it at 3.7 ounces—but at the cost of a couple ounces of total weight. Overall, when taking into consideration its weight, packability, and intended use, we find nothing to complain about regarding its warmth. And an interesting side note on the Ghost Whisperer is that the weight of the down accounts for about 35 percent of the total weight of the jacket—impressive indeed.

All in all the Ghost Whisperer is an apt name for this jacket that’s almost as light as an apparition. The Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer 2 Hoody is easily one of the best overall down jackets on the market. It is very light, super packable, and shows surprising warmth and water resistance for such a thin garment.

But for its intended purpose it is certainly one of the best mid-layer down choices available. I strapped it right below the hood of my pack while moving so that it was easily accessible during breaks. On the 3 day ski trip, I used this jacket is a part of a 5-piece layering system.

Despite hitting a sub-9-ounce weight (for the men’s hoody model), Mountain Hardwear managed to… We’ve seen outdoor gear companies make an encouraging shift towards using ethically sourced down, and Mountain Hardwear is no exception. The Ghost Whisperer UL features RDS-certified plumage, which ensures that no birds were unnecessarily harmed in the production of the jacket. It’s worth noting that the standard Ghost Whisperer has a 100-percent-recycled face fabric, while the UL version does not. And there are other potential areas for improvement—including switching to a PFC-free DWR coating—but we appreciate that Mountain Hardwear is taking steps in the right direction. Due to a torn meniscus and subsequent surgery, we were forced to test this bag extensively while car camping.

Mountain Hardwear Nitrous Vs Ghost Whisperer?

This is another reason that we don’t recommend this bag as highly as the Feathered Friends Vireo UL for exposed bivies on alpine climbs, because it doesn’t have a uniform insulation map like that bag does. We tested the regular length Ghost Whisperer 20, but it also comes in size long, which adds $30, less than one ounce of weight, and six inches of length. For those who like the design but want an even lighter bag for warmer temperatures, check out the Ghost Whisperer 40, which weighs just over 1 lb.

They do for outdoor enthusiasts what Jennifer Love Hewitt does for spirits in that weird CBS drama. Except instead of guiding them to the light, they listen to what they need and want from a product, then guide them to extremely practical, top-of-the-line outdoor kit. Snagging the jacket on anything sharp will easily turn into a big rip. Putting on the jacket for the first time is a strange feeling because it almost seems to float just above your shoulders.

The amazing weight to warmth ratio quickly made this a tester favorite. Whether they were looking for extra warmth for cold belays or gearing up for pre-dawn approaches, our review team quickly latched onto this piece as a must-have part of their kit. As a stand-alone piece, this coat works for temperatures down into the upper thirties, especially if you’re on the move. All around it’s a better constructed jacket but it’s just a lot heavier if ounces matter. It’s the lightest of the group of seven jackets and weighs a mere 7 oz. It feels really light and airy and has the highest warmth-to-weight ratio of the group. The Ghost Whisperer has a women’s specific cut but feels roomy in the chest and able to accommodate layers. The arms are long and I appreciate how the jacket stays down over my waist when I raise my hands overhead. The low profile hood fits snugly on the head yet tight around a helmet.

Made entirely from recycled materials, the ripstop nylon used on this coat is incredibly strong for an ultralight fabric but can still be susceptible to tearing. Down is the most efficient insulator per gram available, so naturally, it is the material of choice when attempting to make the lightest jacket possible. However, the combination of an ultralight exterior and down insulation can result in some hasty and necessary field repairs if you get bad enough tears.

If it wasn’t for the relatively low score we gave this bag for weight, it would have probably been the top overall scorer in this review. Of course, those few extra ounces come with a direct benefit to warmth, which is well worth it if you want a bag that can handle temperatures below those found only in summer. Simply put, this is a lightweight bag for those gnarlier missions to colder, wetter places than an average summertime fastpack. This lightweight body forms a performance mummy cut that maximizes the warmth to weight ratio. The zipper is a ¾ length anti-snag zipper and features fabric reinforcement. At the hood, a one-handed draw cord facilitates the hood closure adjustments.

While we tested the version without a hood, there is a model with hood available. The only thing I felt was missing in this simplistic design was a chest pocket for cell phone or what-have-you, which would have been a nice addition for minimal weight penalty. When outdoor gear manufacturer Mountain Hardwearset out to create a new line of sleeping bags, it didn’t have to look very far to find inspiration. The company’s Ghost Whisperer jacket is amongst the most iconic products in the outdoor industry, setting new standards for weight, warmth, and comfort when it was released back in 2013.

All in all, the Ghost Whisperer is a premium product, and you get what you pay for. For features and design, the Ghost Whisperer has a single drawcord , a ¾ zipper, and though I have broad shoulders, I could still turn over in its mummy-fit design. The top of the bag is constructed with box baffles with no sewn-through seams, while the back does have sewn-through seams, although I didn’t experience cold spots. When it arrived, I thought Mountain Hardwear had sent an empty box. The two handwarmer pockets are placed high enough on the body of the jacket to not get buried under a harness.
