WASHABILITY – Dirt and grime are part of the backpacking/camping lifestyle and many just learn to live with it. But for more fastidious hikers, there are pillows with removable cases that can easily be machine-washed with your clothing after each trip. Check out our tutorial on How to Wash a Down Coat for some pro tips. Here are the main categories of backcountry pillows and some quick links to our top recommendations. WEIGHT – Every ounce matters for backpacking, but sleep systems are a place where it generally makes sense to carry a bit of extra weight for added comfort.

Packed Size

The Air Head Down comes very close to being the best of both worlds. It weighs only 5 ounces, packs up small, offers great support, is easy to use, and is comfortable. Admittedly, we were a little skeptical of a down-topped inflatable; it sounded a bit gimmicky until we tried it out. If you’re looking for a lightweight option that offers more than a little luxury, look no further.

It would also be effective while trying to catch some sleep on a plane or in an airport. While not an ideal weight for long backpacking trips, some of our testers feel the extra weight is worth the supreme comfort this pillow offers. The Sea to Summit Aeros is surprisingly comfortable despite its light weight. Weighing in at a mere few ounces, this pillow deploys to a generous size. When packed, it condenses to about the size of a plum, making it virtually unnoticeable in your pack. The soft polyester cover is complemented by a flexible air cell.

What Is The Best Camping Pillow?

This texturing often comes in the form of small rubber dots that add a bit of stickiness to help keep it on the pad. While it can help a bit, sleepers who tend to move around can still easily knock the pillow off the pad. Some companies like Sea to Summit and Trekology have added contouring to their pillows, basically creating an inflatable hammock for the head. This lowers the chance of the pillow sliding around from underneath you. Sorry, we don’t currently have any of those types of reviews for this product.

Its employs a layered core consisting of an inflatable air cell, topped by a thick slab of memory foam. These two layers are then encased in an outer shell made of polyester and comfy microsuede. Basically, the Fillo is a blend of the top features of several types of pillows, which give it a general appeal to most sleepers. It’s great for car and weekend camping, as well as short backpacking trips. We loved having it on-board during a five-day canoe trip in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota. Additionally, this pillow is great for hammock napping and even lumbar support when sitting for long periods.

Complete The Campsite:

Cocoon’s Air-Core Hood Pillow ($29) weighs less than 4 ounces, packs down to 4 x 3 inches, and sports a soft microfiber face. Built specifically for use in the hood of a sleeping bag, the Hood Pillow’s contoured half-moon shape prevents any bunching up or movement when used inside a mummy bag. The stuff sack is integrated into the pillow, sliding into a pocket on the bottom of the pillow. This is huge for those of us who’ve tossed the contents of our tents looking for our pillow’s tiny stuff sack, only to find it stuck to the bottom of our sleeping bag.

COMPRESSIBILITY – When you have to squeeze everything into a backpack or bike panniers, it’s best to go with an air pillow that folds down small. If luxury and comfort are the ultimate goals , go for something a little bulkier and more plush. If there’s any chance of rain while you’re camping, set up your tent’s rainfly. Make sure that it’s cinched down to prevent the wind from blowing it away. That said, these still work great car camping and especially backpacking. Not only is camping on angled ground uncomfortable, but it will also have you fighting to stay on your pad all night.

Best Camping Tents

We think the Nemo Fillo is one of the best at walking this tightrope between comfort and compressibility. Our reviewers also loved the feeling of the microsuede external shell when lying down for a kip. For its performance and low price point, we liked the REI Co-op Trailbreak Foam Pillow. It’s a perfectly good cushion for most folks who head out for a handful of nights each year and don’t require a pillow that’s ultralight or ultra-packable. Consisting of foam and fabric, this product is simple, without a lot of moving pieces.

It may seem like a luxury item, but small comforts can go a long way towards a more successful outing. If you can’t get a good night sleep you won’t be at 100% the next day, and that will have an impact regardless of the activity. Having the ability to pull out a small pillow on a plane, train, or anywhere you want will always come in handy. The Fillo Luxury retails for $49.95, but can be found onPromotivefor slightly less. The contoured shape holds the head in place while you sleep, and the pillow only takes three to five breaths to completely inflate. A few carefully wrapped garments can make a significant difference and turn a modestly comfortable pillow into a top performer. Also scoring decent marks for comfort is the Rumpl Stuffable Fleece. In the end, we feel this simplicity gives this pillow durability. Utilizing a layer of down feathers on top of an inflated bladder, the Therm-a-Rest Air Head Down and Sea to Summit Aeros Down both come in at the highest cost. While the added feathers certainly increase comfort, they also increase the price. The Nemo Fillo combines some of the most desirable qualities of inflatable and compressible pillows into a top-notch hybrid pillow.

This lets you roll up some clothes and stow them in the bungees if you want more loft. Few things feel better than getting warm and cozy in a sleeping bag on a cool night.
