Deep, vibrant blue hues of the famous body of water can be seen clearly by taking a drive along Rim Drive, which loops around the circumference.

The campground is 30 miles from the many attractions of Medford. A short drive north, Lone Ranch Beach and the beginning of the Samuel H. Boardman Scenic Corridor also invite exploration from the campground. In the opposite direction, a biking trail leads to Brookings, where restaurants, groceries, and other city attractions can add some cultural enjoyment. Exemplifying the rugged nature of the southern Oregon coast, Harris Beach State Park lends access to stunning sea stacks, cliffside views, and one of the best beaches of Oregon. Paradise Campground is the closest place to pitch a tent near all the excitement surrounding the McKenzie River. The campground is near the southern terminus of the National Recreation Trail, near the community of McKenzie Bridge.

Between late May and early October, regular gasoline is available in Crater Lake National Park at Mazama Village. Locally, the Crater Lake Junction Travel Center is open 24/7 and is just 14 miles southeast of the Aspen Inn. September and early October see fewer crowds but still have nice weather, but things tend to take a turn by late October, when snowfall forces the park to close many of its roads. The North Entrance and West and East Rim Drives are always shut after the first major snowstorm or on November 1, whichever comes first.

Sleeping overnight in the park is allowed only for hotel guests, campground campers, and backpackers who obtain a permit. Camping in the park’s pullouts, picnic areas, and parking lots is prohibited. There are no lodges or campgrounds open in the park between mid-October and late May.

That’s because Detroit Lake is a wonderful destination for all kinds of watersports and lake activities. There is a visitor center on site with snacks, souvenirs, and firewood. The snow-capped peak of Mt. Jefferson looms in the background and there are plenty of nearby access roads that lead off into the surrounding wilderness areas. Detroit Lake State Recreation Area is one of the most popular lakeside campgrounds in the entire state. This campground alone has 300 campsites, all of which get reserved quickly, and there are several other campgrounds located around this lake that can fill up just as fast. Set on the east shore of one of the largest lakes in the Oregon Cascades, Crane Prairie Campground features several camping loops and is surprisingly rich with amenities.

Other natural attractions adjacent to the best campgrounds include glaciated peaks, forested headlands, wild rivers, and hot springs. Frontcountry camping means you can get to the campsites by driving in your car, so it’s often called car camping. These campgrounds usually have running water and modern washrooms.
