If you don’t fancy cooking, you must visit the Cape Neddick Lobster Pound Harborside Restaurant, conveniently situated right across the road from the campground. Once you have set up camp you can spend many happy hours exploring hiking and biking trails or having fun on the lake.

Named after the Algonquin Native American word for “boiling tides”, Cobscook Bay State Park’s majestic scenery cannot be beat. It covers 888 acres of coastline and is the best basecamp for your eastern Maine adventures. It’s just a quick drive across the border into New Brunswick if you want to check out the hikes around Saint Stephen or Oak Bay. Camping is primarily tent-only, although there are two Adirondack shelters available too. Campsites must be pre-reserved, which you can do via the link posted above. The most spectacular mountain peak in the region is Mt. Kineo, which rises right out of the lake’s center.

Myrtle Beach State Park is close to all of the wild and crazy entertainment and dining options that the region offers, but it is far enough away to provide a quiet retreat. You’ll find Paradise Park Resort Campground located just 800 feet from the scenic heart of Old Orchard Beach and its famous pier, amusements and shopping. Run by the Halle family, this highly-praised campground is set upon 40 wooded acres, so you’ll have plenty of room to roam. Here you’ll find the 4.6-mile Compounce Ridge Trail, which runs along the eastern rim of the 954-foot-high mountain. It’s a steep climb, but the views are some of the best in Connecticut, with spectacular visions of Meriden’s Hanging Hills and Rattlesnake Mountain. We took advantage of the trolley that pulls right in front of the camp office which made it easy to head down to the beach without worrying about finding a parking spot.
