Because great tent camping options in Maine are practically limitless. Campgrounds in Bar Harbor, Maine, are always a favorite of tent campers. Same with Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Camping, and Riverbend Campground. The good times and great tent camping experiences sure will. Last, but certainly not least, on our tour of lesser-visited state parks is this one in Kittery Point. About as far south as you can get without entering New Hampshire, this entire area is worth exploring.

L.L. Bean in Freeport has a parking overnight area for RVs (you don’t have to ask to stay). Lots of people stay in back of the Kittery Trading Post just as you enter the state . That’s a noisy but fun place to shop and wander through. Camden Hills State Park is just over the $20 mark ($25 resident/35 out of state) but is in a great location for day hiking the mountain range and very near the ocean. The North Woods above Moosehead is controlled by a north woods association that changes its name every now and then. If you are into whitewater rafting, my favorite is Northern Outdoors in The Forks, Maine.

Overnighters will enjoy the amphitheater which is used to show movies during the summer. Huttopia is one of the leading glamping companies in North America, and their Maine branch is a serious standout. Huttopia Southern Maine is located in Sanford, and is an upmarket, clean and relaxing glamping experience. Enjoy the calming vibe out here in the wilds of Maine, with a range of glamping huts and tents that are seriously luxurious.

Float off the shores of Georgetown, Maine, and really connect with those beautiful navy blue waters. Bring kayaks, and take advantage of the most direct water access possible. Even if not talking about Glamping, this might be one of our favorite cabins in Maine.

Blackwoods Campground

After a busy day on the trails you can look forward to a hot shower and a comfortable night at your serviced campsite. Protecting and showcasing the beautiful rocky headlands of Mount Desert Island on the northern Atlantic Coastline, the Acadia National Park is one of the most popular in the US. One of the best ways to explore the park is to bring your tent or RV to one of the 14 campgrounds located close to the park and visit for a while. Most of the privately owned campgrounds offer both tent and RV parking and a variety of on-site facilities to offer you a home-from-home camping experience. Surrounded by lush forests, hikers can choose among 66 miles of hiking trails, with more trails available for horseback riding and biking.

Bass fishing is available for most of these months as well. Moosehead is actually the largest lake in Maine, and while it’s close to Bangor, it’s surrounded by several smaller but vibrant towns rather than a singular city hub. The coastal city of Camden naturally offers some great opportunities for saltwater fishing, but you’d be remiss to not visit Megunticook Lake. Smallmouth and bigmouth bass are stocked here along with white perch and rainbow trout. The good fishing spots for smallmouth bass are most plentiful in June.

Tennessee: Elkmont Campground

There is a lot to do immediately outside the park and campground. The park is located on the grassy shores of Echo Lake and has over 800 acres of protected Maine wilderness. As the state’s official first park there is a rich history here of people enjoying themselves. In 1938 Sebago Lake State Park opened up as one of the first state parks.

Assateague Island National Seashore reopened some campgrounds on June 15, but group campgrounds and some facilities are still closed. At the Isle au Haut town landing, the boat drops off locals, packages, pallets of supplies, and a few day hikers bound for the park’s 18 miles of trails. Then, it cruises past Robinson Point Light and tucks into the narrow finger of Duck Harbor. I disembarked last September with a backpack and my 3-year-old, and we watched from the gangway as the mailboat puttered back into the open ocean and out of sight.

Walk to the nearby pond, gaze at the clear night sky, all while being relatively close to some of the best sites in Maine. Many Maine cabins identify as camps, because of their simplicity and connection to nature. No neighbors are around, so this is a little bit of a secluded site. Row out onto the water in a paddleboat, or come in the winter to experience ice fishing.

I recommend that you purchase a Delorme Maine Gazetteer. It has hundreds of off the beaten path forest campsites. The North Maine Woods will charge a fee to enter at the gate house.

Camping at Mount Blue State Park will give you an unforgettable experience. Mount Blue State Park is the largest state park in Maine. By exploring around this campsite, you will be able to see all the local shops, restaurants, and other amusements. The chance to camp in this way and also be able to canoe or kayak through the waterway is incredible. You may just leave a different person from where you began. The prices of this Oceanside campground are very reasonable for the view.

Open from May through October, Sagadahoc Bay Campground offers great ocean-front camping on Georgetown Island. The campground is ideal for boating enthusiasts – some of the waterfront sites even have their own direct access to the water and your boat can be moored right beside your campsite. The sites all offer water and electrical hookup and the campground has a large open area for lawn games. If you would like to linger longer, you can book one of the seasonal RV sites which have full hookup and space for a small garden. You are welcome to bring along your (well-behaved and vaccinated) pooch or kitty.
