But only the surveying results from two ascents have been revealed to the public, according to the press. Mount Everest’s height was registered by China at 8,848.13 metres in 1975 and 8,844.43 metres in 2005. China has previously conducted six major surveys of the mountain, known in China as Qomolangma, since the establishment of the People´s Republic in 1949. The successful summiting today would mark the country’ seventh conquest. Data on snow depth, weather and wind speed is also being measured to aid in glacier monitoring and ecological protection. In 1970, Japanese mountaineers conducted a major expedition. The centrepiece was a large “siege”-style expedition led by Saburo Matsukata, working on finding a new route up the southwest face. Another element of the expedition was an attempt to ski Mount Everest. Despite a staff of over one hundred people and a decade of planning work, the expedition suffered eight deaths and failed to summit via the planned routes. A typical spot on a commercial team costs anywhere from $40,000 to $100,000 depending on the level of service and the expertise of the outfitter. The Ministry of Tourism reported collecting $5.2 million in 2018 permit fees. Standing at an altitude of 7,320 meters, Camp III sees trekkers battling with technical steep routes and icefalls. Immediate exposure to Camp IV which lies at 7,925 meters has mountaineers fighting for every breath they take. That’s the reason, Sherpa ensures that every hiker takes a proper rest before setting off on the death zone. The lane on the way to the summit passes the yellow band and Geneva Spur, rising towards South Col. It lies at 8,016 meters between Lhotse and Everest where the weather is awful. The area is known as a death zone so the climber walks hard and fast to get off the slope and reach the mountain. The camp is set up at an altitude of 22,145 feet where the climate is pretty nasty so you have to be cautious here.
There’s heavy snowfall around the year mostly winter which makes the trek practically impossible to summit. They do all the hard work including setting camp, placing anchors, and carrying mountaineering equipment for climbers. The other job that Sherpa’s are liable for is to manage porters and ensure the safety of trekkers.
