This kit includes a watch case back opener, a watch holder, 2 watch case back removers, and 2 screwdrivers. This makes it a great tool for any and all tools you may need for removing the case back, as well as replacing the battery. The term swing-out refers to a type of case where there is only one way to access the movement… If you find that under close inspection, there is only one fine line separating the bezel from the body of the case, then this may be the type of case you have. These are cases where the movement is mounted on a ring which is hinged to the INSIDE of the case.

On the downside, it would be tough to open if you don’t have the proper tools. In most cases, you will need a JAXA WRENCH or a CASE WRENCH to open it. If you are having doubts, acquiring the services of a professional is always the safer choice.

Thus, I resorted to snapping off the spring to remove the wheel. Place the watch in the holder or on the foam with the arrows are facing downwards. Using the hammer, lightly tap the end of the push-pin tool over the cotter pins until you can no longer push the pin inside the link. When the pin pops through, remove it using your fingers or a small set of pliers.

With your fingers above the knife, gently push the knife down with the palm of your hand. With enough pressure, the back will separate from the case. When that happens, you can remove the watch from the clamp and use the knife to pry the back off the watch.

Line this up with the end of the spring bar, you can use it to push the end of the spring bar in and compress it. For the snap-off type of back, insert a flat tool such as a small screwdriver into the gap in the cover. The few times I’ve taken it to a Battery Plus or similar store that replaces batteries, I am told they can’t do it because they lack the special tool to open it. When I go to a Jeweler — and overpay for a battery change– the watch guy goes to the back, does his magic, but never explains what type of tool he used.

Once the selection was made, the jeweler would piece the two together very easily, and the customer would be on their way home with their new watch. This is why it is so important to open the case to see what we have. You can’t usually judge a watch by the exterior…it can be deceiving. Pocket watch and wrist watch cases have been designed in MANY MANY different ways. I will try to describe all of the ways to open watches, but only from experience will you truly learn how to “crack every nut”. A selection of tools to help with replacing your watch strap or watch battery.

This is a handy case back opener for screw-down case backs that comes in a small and portable size. Its size is easily adjustable with your thumb via the adjustment wheel so that it can be used for most case backs regardless of their size. This tool from Zeiger is a high-quality case opener for different sizes of watches. The tool is multifunctional thanks to the extensible range of tips, which range from 15mm- 55mm.

I took it to a local jeweler who replaced the battery for US$13.00 (around 8.70 pounds). I might invest in a press and the proper opening tool to do this at home. I have a small collection of inexpensive watches that need batteries every so often. I hope this is not a silly question but I’d like to identify what tool I might need to open this type of screw back watch case (see pic. below). This is an inexpensive Victorinox Swiss Army watch and I really don’t want to spend $20-$25 at a Jeweler’s to have the battery replaced.

The second type of watch case back is the pressure type. Many watches with this type have a small dent or notch on the side or between the lugs where you can place your knife. Some watches have screw-on case backs, which can usually be identified by notches cut into the case back or a coin-like edge.

Here’s a nice picture showing an exploded view of a watch with the components, and here’s another one with good vocab too. Step 13 is a Medana watch; again, mechanical watch with similar components in different positions. Additionally, the watch dial is held on with tiny screws instead of small folded prongs or tension springs. Then the next 6 watches are done in a single step each, with notes in pictures explaining what’s going on. Most professional watchmakers are going to charge around $5 to $14 to replace a basic watch battery, but this can greatly vary depending on the brand and type. Watches with a water resistant battery can cost $40 to $65, whereas chronograph models can cost as much as $65 to $100.

On some wrist watches you will not locate any cover on the back of the watch. It may or may not read “open through crystal” on the back. The movement is actually held in place with the crystal.

Buy quality watch tools to help you change your watch battery and fit or adjust your watch strap or Casio watch bracelet so that your watch will look new again. There is also a tool, that doesn’t cost a lot, that will often be included in a kit that will also contain a block for changing bracelet links or can be sold separately. It will fit into the notches on the back and allow you to turn it to remove. I like these types of watch backs best, because they are easier to put back on than pressure fitted backs.

Another great tool from Bergeon is the 7403 watchmaker case back opener. At its core, this is a Victorinox Swiss army knife, which makes it super easy and convenient to carry with you. Apart from the regular tools you may need in a Swiss army knife, it includes a case back opener knife tool that allows you to pop up the case back. This makes it a great all-around tool, which also happens to include a case back opener. But whether you want to go for a more affordable or more expensive alternative is completely up to you and what purpose you will use it for.

While you can do this with the watch in your hands, you will find placing the watch on a flat surface more comfortable and efficient. You can also use a towel as a cushion if you have an expensive or fragile watch. Look around for more screws to remove, but otherwise that was it for me!
