A great choice for rugged water sports like kayaking, canoeing, and rafting. The bag is in the Pulk under the blue tarpDuring the trips in winter conditions the bag performed as it was designed, the gear that was stored in it was protected from the elements. On the two overnight trips, clothes were stored in the bag and were kept dry while camp was being set up during a snowstorm. During these trips I found the bag was very easy to use and the roll top closure and buckles were equally easy with or without gloves on.

It provides not only a high level of waterproofness but also tear resistance and durability. We tested the 35-liter Sea to Summit Big River, a traditional roll-top dry bag. It is made out of 420D TPU laminated nylon with double-stitched, fully taped, and sealed seams. It features four tie-down points, two D-rings next to the buckle, and a white interior to help you see your belongings more clearly.

What Do You Think About This Product?

The Big River Dry Bags are a durable, strong and abrasion resistant option that uses a 420D nylon fabric with a TPU lamination. If your idea of outdoor recreation involves rugged water sports like kayaking, canoeing, rafting or motorcycle touring, they are the perfect storage bags to keep your gear dry. A white interior laminate affords greater visibility, and hypalon lash loops allow secure stacking or attachment to watercraft, motorcycles and other equipment. The hypalon roll-top closure doesn’t wick water, and the Field Repair Buckles can be replaced in seconds with just a Philips screwdriver. The Big River™ Dry Bags are a durable, strong and abrasion resistant option that uses a 420D nylon fabric with a TPU lamination. If your idea of outdoor recreation involves rugged water sports like kayaking, canoeing, rafting, or motorcycle touring, these are the perfect storage bags to keep your gear dry.

On this trip I kept all of my kitchen gear and fuel in the dry bag and there was a lot of extra volume in the bag, but that just let me roll the top closed even tighter. The bag worked well and I found that my kitchen gear was the only gear in my pack that did not have sand all over it. I poured a good amount of sand out of the bottom of my backpack after my trip and I’m glad my kitchen gear didn’t get coated and I wasn’t chewing on sand during the trip. The bag held up well to the abrasiveness of the slick-rock and sandstone in the area. Both day hikes and 2 of overnight trips were in Rocky Mountain National Park during winter conditions with heavy snow and below freezing temperatures.

Made from heavy duty, 420D nylon, Sea to Summit “Big River Dry Bags” are the ultimate in waterproof storage. Double stitched and with reinforced, tape sealed seams, you can count on years of waterproof gear protection. These are a great choice if you plan to be riding off-road or storing the bag over the rear rack or lashing it to a pannier. So far I think the Dry Bag has meet my expectations as a very durable and functional dry bag.

These materials are waterproof, water-resistant, and generally quite robust and durable. In fact, plenty of inflatable boats are made out of them so that’s how tough these materials are! However, if you have special requirements for your dry bag, you might want to look a little closer at the materials used.

Are Big River Dry Bags ?

They’re reinforced with stainless steel pins, helping them to feel solid and secure. The plastic itself also feels strong and not as flimsy as many other lightweight models, sacrificing durability to shed ounces. The lash patches on each side are made of a welded TPU fabric, another aspect that offers significantly more durability than many of the less expensive models. You can sling your arm through the loop made by the roll-top to get it to your boat, but it sports no additional features for long-distance carrying. This is particularly helpful the larger size you get, as it otherwise has no additional pockets or organizational features.

However, it is a big problem that it can’t be worn on the back because when you are on the adventure of any kind you want both of your hands-frees. Prices are reasonable, so this downside might be overlooked. Without straps, a dry bag can be carried by the fastening buckles, but that might not be ideal for your situation. Each bag comes with a pair of padded straps that can be used to turn the dry bag into a comfortable backpack, or slung over a shoulder instead.

Product Features

I have put a lot of use on this bag and it still looks relatively new. This durability comes with a cost of added weight which I can accept, but the coating on the fabric makes it really difficult for me to pack in my backpacks. All of my backpacks are top loading internal frame packs and packing the dry bag inside of the packs is very difficult . The easiest packing job I had was when the bag was wet on my last trip, but that is far from ideal conditions. Still I really like this dry bag and what frustrates me when using a backpack is what makes me like using this bag in a pulk during winter.

Of course, the most important feature to look out for is a dry bags actual water protection ability. Make sure that it can at least do that before even considering hitting the buy button. If you’re likely to be hitting some white water with your dry bag, abrasion-resistant materials will also be an added boon. If you’re likely to be on the beach all day, then UV-resistant materials will help prevent the construction materials from degrading.

The tough 420D nylon ripstop face fabric is durable and UV resistant. The body of the dry bag is more than adequately waterproof – just avoid submersion, as water can seep through the roll-top closure of any dry bag. Other fastenings can include waterproof zips, tight-clasps, and a combination of all of the above! Depending on what equipment you’re carrying and how fast you need to access it, the choice of fastening that suits your needs best may differ.

Yes, it is a rugged bag that will undoubtedly keep stuff dry when out on the water. Indeed, as I mentioned in the article, this bag doesn’t have any strap. Be aware that some dry bags contains straps, but their quality is not as good as the Big River. Many people use their own strap to carry the bag, and it works great.

Acrodo Waterproof Backpack

It lacks a few comforts and special features, but it performs its primary function admirably. To be frank, dry bags are not designed to be fully submerged underwater for a long time. They float incredibly well without leaking as they provide excellent buoyancy.

Its material repels water and will keep your gear nice and dry unless it is subjected to prolonged submersion. Even then, only a small amount of water can manage to sneak its way in. It comes in a ton of different sizes for just about any adventure and is durable enough to withstand regular use and inexpensive enough to fit a tight budget. Excellent quality, practical design, and a low price make this a high-value, versatile option for many uses. Almost all dry bags use either Nylon or PVC materials as the main element of their construction.

First things first, you should look for the right size that suits your needs. The amount of liters a bag has directly refers to its internal volume. This product offers a simple and durable way to store your gear away from water at an exceptionally reasonable price. From beginners to more advanced water-goers, this product covers the basics and beyond. While the materials used are important, how they’re held together is even more so. It’s all very well having top-shelf textiles, but if they’re not joined together properly water will easily find its way in.
