After instruction and practice on how to use the abseiling equipment, we started our walking and climbing to the top of the cave. The Lost World Epic is the more extreme seven-hour version of the Lost World tour. Like the standard trip, it starts off with a 20-minute 100m abseil but this is a wet tour where you don a wetsuit and explore the Mangapu streamway.

The unfortunate ones end up having their bodies discovered, if they’re that lucky, by national park rangers. Waitomo’s Lost World abyss is one of the lesser-visited parts of the Waitomo cave system but is totally worth it. Leaning back from a steel mesh platform I had to lift the rope with one hand to gain enough slack to drop into my harness and hang freely over the rift.
