Hero is an over-used word these days but it applies to him. High-profile climbers have cited the simplicity and speed with which one can climb as reasons for free soloing, as well as the intense concentration required which brings a Zen-like state of being in the moment. The most successful free soloists also become well known in the climbing community and in rare cases attain notoriety outside the small circle of rock climbers.

Honnold is sponsored by The North Face, Black Diamond, La Sportiva, Goal Zero, Stride Health and Maxim Ropes. He is the founder of the Honnold Foundation, an environmental nonprofit. To this day, he maintains his simple ‘dirtbag-climber’ existence, living out of his van and travelling the world in search of the next great vertical adventure. “That’s the most magnificent crack on planet earth.” This is said un-ironically near the beginning of the third act in the documentary, Free Solo. I have nothing to add to this and no point to make, but I was the only one who laughed out loud at this in the theater and wanted to share. Our subject, Alex Honnold, feels no obligation to maximize his life and it is this unique outlook that intrigues us to Honnoldï¿ 1/2s journey as much as his ability to scale seemingly flat surfaces does.

I created reality blurred 20 years ago as a place to collect interesting links I found. Today, I review and recommend reality shows, documentaries, and nonfiction entertainment; analyze news and report from behind the scenes; and interview people who create and star in reality TV shows. You’ll also find other people’s insightful takes on reality TV in these pages, too. Andy DehnartAndy Dehnart is the creator of reality blurred and a writer and teacher who obsessively and critically covers reality TV and unscripted entertainment, focusing on how it’s made and what it means. Just watching the trailer for Free Solo makes my hands clammy and damp, and the moments where Alex Honnold actually climbs are literally breathtaking—even knowing that he didn’t die trying. The documentary feels more like a gripping piece of television than a fully fleshed out feature-film narrative.

In addition to a Netflix-like on-demand streaming library, Hulu also offers a bundle of 50-plus live TV channels, including National Geographic. Free Solo is also included in the “Hulu With Live TV” on-demand library (but not the regular Hulu on-demand library), so you can watch it right now. The movie is a National Geographic Film, and Nat Geo falls under the Fox Studios umbrella, which means that the documentary could eventually find its way to Disney’s upcoming streaming service. Parents need to know that Free Solo is a documentary about climber Alex Honnold, who attempts to scale the 3,000-foot El Capitan in Yosemite, California, without any ropes or safety gear. The actual climb itself is a monumental sequence — and a testament to perseverance — but other parts of the movie may not sit well with all viewers, including Alex’s distant nature and laid-back attitude about death. Still, the film is worth watching for the amazing finale. Expect to hear discussions about death and see the faces of other climbers who fell and died.

A gifted but hard-working athlete, Alex ‘No Big Deal’ Honnold is known as much for his humble, self-effacing attitude as he is for the dizzyingly tall cliffs he has climbed without a rope to protect him if he falls. Honnold has been profiled by 60 Minutes and The New York Times, has featured on the cover of National Geographic, appeared in international television commercials and starred in numerous adventure films, including the Emmy-nominated Alone on the Wall. He is currently the subject of the documentary feature Free Solo, which is being released by National Geographic Documentary Films.

To this day, he maintains his simple “dirtbag-climber” existence, living out of his van, donating a significant portion of his income to the Honnold Foundation, and traveling the world in search of the next great vertical adventure. Dwight Bishop fell (19 July 2004; age 49) while climbing alone and unroped along the Grand Traverse route on Grand Teton peak in Wyoming. There are few climbers who have free solo climbed in the 5.14 grade range.

But when we finally do, those 15 minutes or so of footage are as phenomenal as anything you’ll see this year… Equal parts anxiety-inducing and affecting, Free Solo is a fascinating examination of an intrepid athlete’s determination to achieve his lifelong ambition. “A visually stunning adventure with a compelling character at the center.”

This is countered with Honnoldï¿ 1/2s first-hand accounts of his childhood which interestingly enough tend to conflict with his motherï¿ 1/2s perspective. Everything about the sequence is absolutely nerve-wracking even if you know or are pretty sure you know the outcome. As much as Honnold risks and is the center of attention here the documentary crew and cameramen are rock stars in their own right allowing the audience to kind of ï¿ 1/2getï¿ 1/2Â? Why Honnold was so taken with this challenge, this need to conquer, by giving us a slight glimpse into the feelings one must experience when coming to the end of such a journey. Free solo climbing, or free soloing, is a form of technical ice or rock climbing where the climbers climb alone without ropes, harnesses or other protective equipment, forcing them to rely entirely on their own individual preparation, strength, and skill. Free soloing is the most dangerous form of climbing, and unlike bouldering, free soloists climb above safe heights, where a fall can very likely be fatal.

Not only is National Geographic one of 95 live TV channels included in the main Fubo bundle, but Free Solo is included in FuboTV’s on-demand library, so you can watch it right now. That machine not only gave access to pads to women in India, but also empowered women because they became entrepreneurs, being able to make and sell pads to their communities. Solo represents the traits of four different men encompassing their love, rage, and afterlife. It brings four basic elements water, air, fire, and earth on the screen along with the varied facets of Lord Shiva.

“FREE SOLO is less about climbing than it is about living. An extraordinary gift to everyone who believes that the limit of human achievement is far from being reached.” It was “He Named Me Malala” that caught the eye of directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, who reached out to Dill to produce FREE SOLO. A non-climber with a well-known fear of heights, Dill decidedly came quickly on board. She was on the ground from day one overseeing every aspect of production for over two years of often logistically and emotionally challenging filmmaking. Shannon Dill is currently Head of Production at Concordia Studio. Founded in 2017 by Laurene Powell Jobs and Davis Guggenheim, the company develops, produces and finances nonfiction stories about important issues of our time.
