The Eradicator was an ancient Kryptonian object designed to terraform any surface into Krypton. After Superman recovers the object and brings it back to Earth, the Eradicator begins to alter substances around it. Eventually, Superman throws the device into the ground, but this activates the Eradicator. It soon begins to form crystalline structures surrounding its location and develops a Phantom Zone Projector. Unlike Superman’s version, Doc Savage’s Fortress of Solitude was clouded in mystery. Not only were some of the objects he had been testing unknown, but some of the tests themselves were kept secret.
He nevertheless plans to restore the Peruvian Fortress, even if compromised and no longer in a secret location, and plans more Fortresses around the world. This version of the Fortress physically resembles the movie and television depictions, and Superman communicates with Jor-El via crystal constructs as in the Superman film and Smallville. This concept was often invoked in later stories, and one story featured Superman hiding his secret identity from a telepath behind a door identical to that of the pre-Crisis Fortress. By that time, however, a more physical Fortress had been reintroduced.

Wizard Chess Has Nothing On Super Chess
College life witnesses the generational changes in music styles that saw punk, new wave, disco, rap, hip hop, soul and R&B dominate the seventies to the nineties. However, both on my first pre-GR reading and my recent re-reading of this novel, I was relatively disappointed. This time, I decided to adhere to my original three-star rating, although this is by no means a recommendation that other readers not read the novel. A musical adaption conceived of and directed by Daniel Aukin with music and lyrics by Michael Friedman and book by Itamar Moses was produced by New York Stage and Film and Vassar College’s Powerhouse Theatre in the summer of 2012.
More importantly, he is Mingus’s father, and a musical icon for Dylan. For miles and miles in all directions the white waste looked absolutely barren – except directly ahead, where there was obviously an island. The bronze man simply disappeared from his usual haunts, sometimes for months at a time, and during these absences, it was absolutely impossible to get in touch with him. When Doc came back from these absences, he explained simply that he had been at his Fortress of Solitude -and usually, too, he brought back some new invention, or the solution of some complicated problem of science or surgery. The island seemed to be solid stone, with no bit of soil and no vegetation. It must be as solid as Gibraltar, for it stood firm against the ice pack.
Clark asked Jor-El if he could begin his training, only for Jor-El to tell him instead to watch over Kara, claiming she could not be trusted. After returning from the Phantom Zone and defeating Zod, Clark returned to the Fortress and stored the Crystal of El there for safekeeping. He tried to talk to Jor-El, but Jor-El wouldn’t answer, leading him to the conclusion that the Fortress was now “dead,” unaware that the Fortress was damaged after he destroyed Brainiac and accidentally released Zod. When her plane crashed in the Arctic near the Fortress, Martha dragged an unconscious Lois Lane into the Fortress and was greeted by Jor-El.
In one episode of the Super Friends which Superman died, the Super Friends visited the Fortress of Solitude and it required a giant key to enter the fortress, just like the comic version. One year later, under the influence of red kryptonite, Clark willingly brought Major Zod to the Fortress in an attempt to allow Zod to communicate with Jor-El. Unfortunately, Jor-El refused to establish contact with his son or his former best friend.
In almost every incarnation of The Fortress of Solitude, Kal-El’s Kryptonian heritage is apparent. Perhaps the most obvious call-back to Kal-El’s past are the statues of his parents, Jor-El and Lara, holding a globe of Krypton. In most versions, his parents appear as statues, but in other iterations they are shown as holograms. Reminding Superman of his parentage and heritage helps Kal-El remember who he is and what he stands for. Seeing his parents acts as a reminder that he is on Earth to not just to make his adoptive parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent, proud, but to also adhere to the values and hopes that his Kryptonian parents had for him. The Fortress of Solitude is luminous, stinging with truth and life.

One moment, he’s a caring father, then he starts acting openly hostile to his son. He will be coerced into forgiveness, but then trap Lois Lane in a cage of pure energy. It makes sense, then, that they don’t want to keep bringing up Superman by name, because that just reminds the audience that there’s another, “bigger” superhero running around this world.
In the New 52 universe of Prime Earth however, no such technology exists. After burying his counterpart in Smallville he returns to the Fortress and uses his heat vision to create a statue of Superman of Prime Earth to honor his fallen comrade. Superman’s Silver Age Fortress, which debuted in 1958, was also located in the Arctic and served similar purposes.
John Sunlight turns up next in New York City, where he wants to settle a grudge against the Russian diplomat Serge Mafnoff, who had been responsible for his sentencing. Attacks and abuse run high, but Dylan forges a friendship with his neighbor, Mingus Rude. Despite their differences in family (Dylan from white hippies, Mingus from a cocaine-addicted, formerly popular black singer), they soon share disappointments in that area. Letham paints a strong picture of the charm and volatility of the Dean Street neighborhood. His social commentary on race relations, comic books, music and decades of life in Brooklyn are strong and rarely heavy-handed. As the stories continued, it was revealed that the Fortress was where Superman’s robot duplicates were stored.
I half expected to find that Jonathan Lethem is one of those authors that readers either love or hate, but was surprised by how mad the people who hate him are. Personally, I fall into the former camp – those who love Mr. Lethem’s work. “We were in a middle space then, in a cone of white, father and son moving forward at a certain speed. Side by side, not truly quiet but quiescent, two gnarls of human scribble, human cipher, human dream.” Brooklyn life is portrayed in loving detail, with an emphasis on music, super heroes, graffiti, drugs and street games.
A few months after Jimmy was killed Clark was able to repair the Fortress and his connection to Jor-El to resume his Kryptonian training. Although fully repaired there were still a number crystallized pillars that were still black after Brainiac was defeated. During the series’ tenth and final season, the Fortress became home to a Martha Kent-crafted, classic Superman costume, which Clark would go on to don in the final episode. Rather than being specifically made for the production, the costume was originally designed and created for Brandon Routh to wear in Superman Returns.

The Fortress of Solitude uses native Kryptonian technology to achieve feats of immense power. In the past, it has opened a portal to the Phantom Zone, reversed time, as well as created a complete solar eclipse. Given the broad range of its powers and abilities, it is the most powerful entity in the Smallville multiverse, with power surpassing even that of Clark and other Kryptonians, as well as even villains like Darkseid.
