The Parks Department secured the majority of the park property from the Department of Natural Resources and Washington State Parks through a reconveyance action.

Hikers can roam all day on the network of trails leading through the forest, down to the Snohomish River and up to views of the Cascades and Snohomish valley. We were mainly in the forest before coming up to Marsh Lake. Perhaps it’s the low water, but the lake looked more like a swamp. The dense brush kept us from moving closer to the shore, and I was too lazy to fight it. Somehow I could ly find the names of the lakes on the park map.

Keep following the trail through the woods, cross a little outlet stream and head up. You will see signs marking this the Red Barn trail, but again, it does not appear on a map. This area was logged at least twice, once of its old-growth trees, then again of the second-growth. You can still see some big stumps with springboard notches, now serving as nurse stumps for red huckleberry. Because the trees here are third-growth forest, enough light comes through for sword fern and salal to thrive.

Always safe to keep your dogs on leash since there could be wildlife encounter. I was expecting to photograph some birds but didn’t find any. Couple of trails were closed for restoration when I went there. Good place to get you and your dog some exercise and get exhausted. Turn left onto Old Tester Road, go about 0.1 mile to the parking lot just past the park entrance gate. Lord Hill is a popular park, so the trails are well-maintained , and offer good footing.

So initially, I thought about including Bald Hill as well. As it turned out, the top was in the backyard of a house, so we skipped it. But we enjoyed our walk in the rest of the park as planned. The park sits on a ridge that runs parallel to the Snohomish River. The ridge, which reaches nearly 800 feet at Bald Hill, consists of vertical basalt outcroppings that rise from the river floor. Settlers arrived when Mitchell Lord purchased 80 acres on the hill in 1878 and started dairying on his 130-acre farm in 1884. By the mid-1930s, the area attracted the logging industry, and all the old-growth was cut down. In the 1980s, some second-growth timber was harvested by the Department of Natural Resources.

Your route passes by some mature cedars and firs eventually coming to the old quarry. Pass beneath cut ledges now quickly being reclaimed by greenery before coming to an old rusting steam shovel and small shack. The way then turns northward climbing steeply up a lush ravine. There are good views south over the river and rolling countryside. Soon come to a small wetland created by an old earthen dam since breached.

The many wanderings to be had here start off as you leave the parking lot on the boardwalk trail. The Main trail will lead to the junction with the West View trail. Follow that, and it will lead to a nice loop and a viewpoint on Devils Butte, with nice views looking north across the valley to the mountains.

It all started in 1879, when Mitchell Lord purchased 80 acres on the hill. During these uncertain times, please keep safety in mind and consider adding destinations to your bucket list to visit at a later date. Beyond Temple Pond was the Dragonfly Pond, where we paused and continued north. We later stopped off to the side of the trail and took a break among the tall timbers. The pup has been napping in my pack and hasn’t moaned much so far.

The wildlife on Lord Hill include small-sized animals , medium-sized animals , and large-sized animals . I managed to make it to the upper parking lot via Monroe and arrived to an empty lot. The trails were in fairly good condition considering the wind we had and a nice coating of ice pellets on the wood puncheons made for appreciated traction.

Continue straight past the park entrance on 150th onto the gravel road to the equestrian parking area off 127th. Zoom in to see individual jumps, click circles to view jump details. Lord Hill does welcome equestrians and many boy scout troops use this park as outings.
