As other analyzers have mentioned, the chalet is old/retro and the ski hill is small with only 2 chair lifts, a tow line and limited runs. Definitely the best place to learn to ski or snowboard in the area. I think that the owners care about creating a good experience for all who come. If you are there on a day with school groups, or any large group for that matter, there is inadequate space, secure storage, and restrooms. The equipment checkout area has only one small entrance/exit that makes it very hard to get in and out when large groups are there. The lifts are old and are two-person lifts which result in long lines when large groups are in attendance. It feels like the resort has a lot of community support, and the people are really helpful and friendly. One is actually about one mile in length, but it’s a bit tame. Still, the view is great, and it’s a fun experience to be out on the hill. The steeps are manageable, but one was a bit too iced up when we were on the slope. The big problem is that the hill is pretty small. That’s counterbalanced by the ease of moving from lift to life and skiing around the resort.

Schuss down Sam’s Slide on the One Mile Loop. These trails are for hiking and cross-country skiing. Mountain bikes, motorized vehicles, ATV’s and snowmobiles are not allowed on any of the trails. Forest trails policy prohibits the use of saddle, pack or draft animals on hiking and cross-country ski trails. Camping is allowed along the trail as long as your equipment does not block the trail Grooming of the trails may take place at any time. Please leave the trail when you hear the groomer approaching.

Winter Low Temps

The Laurel Mill Trailhead is located three miles west of Ridgway on Township Road 307, often called the Spring Creek Road. The trails can be found on the Portland Mills quadrangle map. Laurel Mill offers challenges to a wide range of skill levels. The Elk Loop and Perseverance Loop are designated EASIEST and are suitable for beginning skiers. The Scout Loop, Hemlock Loop and One Mile Loop are designated MORE DIFFICULT and are suitable for more advanced skiers.

For snowboarders, there are 3 terrain parks and a half pipe. The majority of the trails at Coffee Mill are covered by snowmaking. The Laurel Mill Trail is a system of interconnecting loops totaling 17.2 kilometers (10.7 miles) for cross-country skiing and hiking. The trailhead offers parking, restroom and a warming hut that are accessible to persons with disabilities.

If you desire solitude, try the trails on the southern side of the system. The scenery and quiet will be well worth the effort. Enjoy a meal at Lunch Rocks or Gillis Flats on the Sparrow Nest Loop.

Coffee Mill Ski Area is located in Wabasha, Minnesota offering 28 skier and rider accessible acres. Featuring a 425-foot drop and 90% snowmaking, it features the best of coulee skiing in a unique bowl. Skier and riders will find 10 ski trails, served by 3 lifts. Additional fun can be had snow tubing and race training is available outside of ski school. We arrived with a party of 7, of various skill levels. Normally we would spend the day apart and only see each other occasionally in the lodge.

I think it might appeal to snowboarders a bit more than skiers. Probably best for a family ski trip,especially for beginners and intermediates. Coffee Mill is an older, smaller ski area that does a lot of things well. They are a great place for first-time and inexperienced skiers to gain skills and confidence. They offer ski/snowboard packages and lift tickets at a very reasonable price. The views of the Mississippi River valley are gorgeous from most of the runs.

Average Snowfall

The staff is extremely friendly and helpful, both in the chalet and on the slopes. You can be out of your car and on the runs in 15 minutes or less. Coffee Mill supplies snowmaking, grooming, night skiing, lessons, and equipment rental. The slopes at Coffee Mill are open for skiers and snowboarders alike.

Historical Weather

The ski school offers lessons for beginners and advanced individuals alike. Speed lovers may like to take part in one of the races that take place every week. There are several race programs to choose from.

All runs are open & all have great snow conditions which have been groomed perfectly. This warm weather isn’t touching the snow there with their north facing slopes & shaded runs. They groom the runs in the morning, so you don’t get icy spots. I can’t wait to ski Coffee Mill after Christmas, it’s just so good & nice there.
