Mazda Cx 50 Vs Cx 5

7 min read

Both the 2022 Mazda CX-5 and the 2023 Mazda CX-50 have simple, classy interiors that are borderline luxurious. They have vertical vents and wider infotainment screens than other models. The vehicles also have almost the same amount of headroom, legroom, hip room, and shoulder room in the front and rear seats.

Except for the cargo area, the 5 has more interior space than the 50 and a higher driving position. Handling is pretty much identical, but the 50 is less comfortable in the back due to the cheap torsion beam. Aside from some of the switch covers, the 5 also has a posher interior. Because of the proportional differences, the CX-50 has more legroom, but slightly less headroom in the back. The new model also has a longer trunk with a lower load lip, so it’s better for camping adventures compared to the CX-5. The 2022 Mazda CX-5 starts from $25,900 and the 2023 Mazda CX-50 is offered for $26,800.

A Detailed Look Back At The Mk3 Toyota Supra

Mazda CX-5 vs Mazda CX-50 Compare price, expert/user feedbacks, mpg, engines, safety, cargo capacity and other specs at a glance. 2022 Mazda CX-5 | MazdaThe Mazda CX-50 and CX-5 are relatively similar. They both ride on the same platform, and they feature the same engine options. The main difference is that the CX-50 will be slightly longer than the CX-5, and it will offer more off-road capability. But it is still a unibody SUV, so do not expect the kind of off-road chops you would find with something like a Toyota 4Runner. The CX-50 is based on the same basic platform as the Mazda3 and CX-30.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 has a leather-covered steering wheel. Premium trims have a power-adjustable driver and passenger seats, premium leather upholstery and a full-color active driving display. All models will come with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder but the one to get is the more powerful turbocharged variant offering 256 horsepower; the base non-turbo offering makes just 187 hp. A six-speed automatic is standard, as is all-wheel drive, and Mazda has baked-in crisp handling to the CX-50 so that it carries on the company’s tradition of offering fun-to-drive vehicles.

Reddit users say it’s due to the Navi SD card, if that’s the case why isn’t Mazda doing anything about it. Overall the cx5 is a great suv, the turbo is very thirsty as I only get 300 miles on a full tank. Although Mazda’s 2022 CX-5 and 2023 CX-50 have many of the same features, there are some key differences between them. The CX-50 is equipped with off-road driving mode which enables it to better navigate tricky terrain conditions. The CX-5 has more curb weight than the CX-50, 3,717 pounds to 3,706 pounds.

It’s a nimble small SUV that can easily navigate tight city traffic, excels on the open highway, and is an ideal daily driver. With the 2023 Mazda CX-50, it’s the acceleration, handling, and off-road capabilities that set it apart. The CX-50 is surprisingly sporty, can handle challenging twisting roads, and its firm suspension can keep the body roll in check during cornering. Its all-wheel-drive supplies excellent traction for powering out of curves and handling off-road adventures with ease. Plus, it remains controlled when ascending and descending steep dirt trails with Off-road drive mode providing steering and traction control.

That makes choosing between the Mazda CX-5 and the CX-50 even more difficult. Compared to the CX-5, the 2023 Mazda CX-50 stands about 6.5 inches longer and 3.0 inches wider, with about an inch more ground clearance but a 2.0-inch-lower roofline. The CX-50’s squared-off bodywork flares at the bottom like a set of bell bottoms to emphasize the CX-50’s greater width, while black fender cladding emphasizes its off-road intentions. While it would seem logical to build a long-wheelbase CX-5, the CX-50 shares its platform (and its torsion-beam rear axle) with Mazda’s smaller CX-30. In this case, both SUVs have been equipped with the same 2.5-liter turbocharged engine making 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque on normal octane fuel.

Otherwise, the CX-50 doesn’t share any parts with the Toyota Corolla Cross, despite being built in the same factory. The Mazda CX-50 and CX-5 are two popular mid size crossovers. With similar powertrains and styling elements, the CX-5 and the CX-50 attract much the same buyers. However, while the CX-5 has a reputation for on-road sportiness, the larger CX-50 is more attractive to people who like a rugged, outdoorsy, off-road adventure. But the CX-50 is more versatile, longer, wider and has a fresher design even though the 2022 CX-5 has some impressive, smart updates.

Autoblog Daily Roundup

My husband wasn’t a fan of the minimal headroom in the driver’s seat (it also felt a bit squishier in the CX-5’s driver’s seat than the CX-50). By the numbers, it’s not a huge difference — 999 mm in the CX-5 and 981 mm in the CX-50 — but comfort-wise, it’s an entirely different story, and also why I’d urge you to test each vehicle thoroughly. The good old (and at this point, I use “old” with a more exasperated tone) 6-speed automatic transmission continues as the workhorse of the CX-50 lineup.

For example they redesigned the Explorer and it has terrible reliability and engine problems when the old one was solid. Supposedly new models are coming out in 2023 or 2024 but with the supply issues I decided to grab what I could now that was available as the future is uncertain… He has held a lifelong passion for cars, with a particular interest in hot hatchbacks and off-road rigs. The Mazda CX-5 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 8.7 seconds with the base engine and 6.6 seconds with the turbo. The CX-50 should be just as fast, but its extra length and weight could slow it down. SUV Comparison: 2023 Mazda CX-50 vs 2022 Mazda CX-5

Both the 2023 Mazda CX-50 and the 2022 Mazda CX-5 are high-end SUVs with lots of conveniences, infotainment, and connectivity technology. Some of the technologies both vehicles have are remote start, keyless entry, push button start, and power door locks and windows. Plus, while the CX-5 has an HD radio and the CX-50 doesn’t, both vehicles have smart device integration, a WiFi hotspot, auxiliary audio input, and an MP3 player as part of their standard equipment. It will offer the same 2.5-liter and turbo 2.5-liter inline-four engine options as most other Mazda models, with a hybrid coming later. The factor that differentiates the CX-50 from the CX-5 and, frankly the rest of Mazda’s crossover lineup is that it is more off-road-focused. The design of the CX-50 is more rugged and clearly conveys that it is meant to be driven on more than just the road.

Meanwhile, the CX-5 has a more sophisticated and smooth ride. What really gets me is that the cheaper CX-5 is assembled in Hiroshima, Japan while the new CX-50 is made on the joint assembly line with Toyota in Huntsville, Alabama. This seems like something minuscule to compare, but if heated back seats are important to you, then it’s probably important to note the placement of the buttons in each vehicle. The CX-50 is intuitive — the buttons are right below the rear vents. In the CX-5, the buttons are placed in the pull-down armrest in the middle of the outward seats. Basically, if you have someone sitting in the middle seat, the buttons are inaccessible.

The super-sharp steering feels darty on the open road and requires constant correction. If we so much as glanced at the small center screen to change the radio station, we’d look up to find the CX-50 making a beeline for the next lane over. Mazda says the driver should always pay attention, and of course that’s correct—but it makes us question the system’s usefulness. A hard ride and lots of road noise rounded out the experience and had us wishing our drive could have been shortened by an hour or two.

The more expensive trim levels feature plush materials such as leather upholstery, available in a nice shade of brown, and a panoramic sunroof will be optional. Like other Mazdas, we expect the CX-50’s cabin to trend closer to the luxury end of the spectrum than many of its mainstream competitors, including the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Both engine options pair with a six-speed automatic transmission.

2023 Mazda CX-50 | Mazda If you’re ready to zoom-zoom into the wild, then the 2023 Mazda CX-50 is an excellent option to consider. It’s like the Mazda CX-5, only it’s built for off-roading. It has a higher ground clearance with available rugged accessories. We admire Mazda’s commitment to making great-handling cars, but the all-new 2023 Mazda CX-50 shows how a good thing can be taken too far. Car enthusiasts will find the CX-50 entertaining on a sharp twisty road, and its off-road traction and towing stability are impressive. However, Mazda seems to have neglected the fact most mid-size SUVs live a life outside of the curves, and the CX-50 disappoints some in terms of everyday livability.

CX-50s with the turbocharged engine can tow up to 3,500 pounds. We got a chance to tow at max capacity and were impressed by the SUV’s stability. The CX-50 has a Towing drive mode that once again uses the center differential to shift weight forward and improve steering response. We found the difference too subtle to feel, but to be fair, a strong sense of self-preservation prevented us from jerking the wheel with the trailer attached.
