Personally I despise light, short shotguns. If you are looking for slim and petite this ain’t the shotgun for you. The 1100’s were never built on a true 16 gauge receiver. If you shoot a 12 gauge 1100 well, you will shoot the 16 gauge 1100 well.

From his perch in his faux leather reclining chair, the Old Man watched, just a hint of a grin on his lips. Christmas, that year, was a success on several different fronts. But these days specific models can be difficult to find. The iconic Remington Model 1100 is still one of the best.

In the midst of this instantaneous process, a fresh shotshell is released from the magazine, and elevated into an active loading position via a carrier. To disassemble the Old School M1100 is to understand its inner workings. Inside the fore-end and riding the magazine tube, two gas pistons – or, technically, a gas piston and a gas piston seal – assist in the gas-metering process. At least half a dozen Ohio whitetails fell to that combo over the years, including my first buck. Prairie chickens, sharp tails, ruffed grouse, doves, pigeons, snipe, rails, woodcock, teal, Canada geese; the only fowl not on the list for the M1100 is a wild turkey.

Thus the gauge, represented by 16 one-oz balls of lead to make a one pound fit for the bore, was “square” with the weight of shot the shell was pushing. It’s one of those things that ought to be true, even if it isn’t. It is a heavy gun with its steel receiver which is good for competition but bad for hunting all day long.

Also, it shoots winchester slugs like you wouldn’t believe. With only the bead it will keep 5 slugs in a 5 inch group at 40yards all day but it really hates the remington stuff. Lastly, the 1100 is very particular about having the gas tube cleaned regulary. If your oil ever gums up the your cycling is really going to suffer. I have seen one gun I couldn’t fix after “fixing” it several times. A Weatherby Patrician after only several boxes of light bird loads broke the carrier than ran in a groove in the chamber off the carrier itself, a matter of two pins that held it in.

These guns have seen good care and are not dinged up but handling them tends to polish the matt wood over time and it goes glossy, at least mine did. The gun is listed in the current online catalogue as having a gloss finish on the wood, perhaps they have recently changed to matt wood finish. If you are on a personal connection, like at home, you can run an anti-virus scan on your device to make sure it is not infected with malware. Parts I have seen break are the ejector, bolt buffer, fore-end hanger .

All other reasons for returns on non-certified used guns are ineligible. The newer 16 gauge 1100’s are a few ounces heavier than the older guns because of the barrel wall thickness and the addition of Remchokes. I bought the gun new and it has appx 300 rounds through it. Condition is about as close to 100% as you can get with a used gun.

A metal link or rod connecting the bolt and bolt plate slides back, compressing the recoil spring in the stock. I haven’t had the chance to see the new 1100 but i currently own an older one. Mine doesn’t have any bells or whistles except for some factory engraving. It’s in improved cylinder and is absolutely the best quail/rabbit gun that i have ever owned.

Do you know about the “square load” philosophy? I have no idea whether it makes any technical sense–others will tell us, no doubt. Anyway, it was widely believed, among the men in the town where I grew up, that the perfect shotgun load was a 16-ga with a one-oz.

I still have the original box and owners manual. It came with the conventional F,M and IC, but I bought a Cylinder and Skeet choke from Briley. There was one on either side but just the one side would break. After re-brazing, breaking and remaking new pins of a larger diameter and breaking againand re-brazing after a couple more pins of ever increasing diameter I finally gave up and sold the gun. It was the absolute lightest shooting 12 gauge I had ever used including a full weight A-5 Browning. It’s interesting to note that upon my receipt of the shotgun in ‘79, dedicated slug barrels, smoothbore or otherwise, weren’t available. Fortunately, my Uncle Jim owned a sporting goods store, and was able, I know not how, to obtain a shortened, no-rib tube for the 16 to which he had brazed a set of adjustable iron sights. I was 15 that Christmas, and a veteran, or so I thought, of some seven hunting seasons.

My dad has one just like it only maybe not quiet in this nice of condition. I was thinking about getting one of my own.
