Pronounced like “wey,” it translates to “ox” but is used most similarly to the way we say “dude,” except sometimes it can be used derogatorily to call someone silly or used as an exclamatory word. This is the common way people migrate here from countries such as Mexico and at the end of the story Jorge explains that he has to go back to Mexico, but will not be able to return. Therefore, it is clear that his family are immigrants. This story explains what immigration is and the challenges children face when attending a new school without knowing the language. I believe this book is an excellent way to teach students about immigration and help students be more understanding to their classmates who come from different countries. This book was WOW book for me because it immediately caught my attention by starting off with a Spanish poem. At first, I was unsure if I should keep reading since I do not speak Spanish, but I am so glad I did because I really felt moved from these poems.
