How Long Can You Camp In National Forests?

Most of this stuff is out west – although there’s some limited dispersed camping in Maine and Michigan’s UP. All you need to know is what areas of the national forests allow dispersed camping. It’s especially difficult to find unmarked camping spots in the dark, so leave yourself plenty of daylight to find your campsite and settle in. Most National Parks prohibit sleeping in your car in their parking lots.

You may camp in a dispersed area in an individual Ranger District for up to 14 days within a 30-day period. After 14 days, you must move to another Ranger District or off the National Forest until the 30 days has elapsed. You don’t need a house because when you travel, you’re home. I’m sad to say this, but especially in a big, conspicuous RV, you cannot boondock anywhere in, or near, the Florida Keys. Throughout the Florida Keys, and especially in Key West, there are not any places where you can pitch a tent, or park a normal car to sleep, without being disturbed by the police.

National Forest Dispersed Camping Guide

We’ll see the occasional ATV ride by, but it’s a quiet spot to camp and relax together as a family. Access from I-17 is easy, with campsites appearing almost immediately off the highway. If you’re coming from the Sedona side you’ll need to drive quite a ways along the road before reaching the area where camping is permitted. The road on the Sedona side is also much more rugged, so only those with 4WD, high-clearance, and some experience driving rocky roads should come from this way. This dispersed camping area has room for approximately five campsites and is about a 1 hour drive from the North Rim Entrance Station.

Once we have the relevant MVUM we typically like to cross reference the area on the map with Google Maps satellite view. This let’s you zoom in on an area to see if there are any obvious campsites already created and narrow down your search a bit. The next resource we recommend utilizing when looking for dispersed campsites are Motor Vehicle Use Maps published by the Forest Service. There are three main websites/apps that we like to use when searching for dispersed camping in National Forests, outlined below.

These sites will provide you with information on a specific campsite rather than on a broader area. This is a good way to find a specific location, or just get some intel on what the area might be like. Cross reference MVUMs with Google Maps satellite view to get a sense of where good dispersed campsites may be located. Despite facility closures, millions of acres of BLM-managed public lands across California remain open to enjoy, as long as you do so responsibly and safely.

Always check the National Forest’s website that you are going to before you leave just to make sure there aren’t any other special rules in effect. You can easily do this by searching “Name National Forest Dispersed Camping” and you should have all that you need. Forest Road 29 is well-packed and easy to drive along at least for the first several miles. Eventually it begins ascending a mountain and four-wheel drive becomes necessary.
