When it comes to the winch, I may never really have to use the winch but we are alone in the woods and if we get stuck I will have the winch. I am taking the mindset either not have a winch or get a cheap one. Mine had come with the universal plate as well – i sold that and bought the TJ plate….
Yes I did shorten the bumper myself- it was a little harder than the winch install, but not that bad. As for the total cost- $30.00 for winch plate and $10-15 or so in grade 8 bolts and misc. Other than trimming the plate and cutting the hole in the front of the bumper for the cable and fairlead bolts, it’s like bolting in any winch. The winch install took me and a friend about 4 hours including wiring and all. The stubby mod took us more like6-8 hours as there was a little more trial and error and make it up as you go involved!

Unfortunately, a 12 didn’t have that option so he’s stuck cutting to fit if he wants it recessed. Rock Hard system requires no cutting what so ever, just remove the filler strip between the bumper and the grill, drop it in and bolt it to the frame. The downside is you can’t remove the grill without pulling all of that stuff. It took a few hours of drilling holes, cutting and grinding to get it to fit.
