Remington 870 Super Mag Duck Blind Camo

6 min read

The Remington 870 Super Mag is one of the most popular shotguns in the world. If you received a damaged, defective, or incorrect item, Impact Guns will ship you a replacement of the exact item upon receipt of the damaged or defective item. Impact Guns will send you a return shipping label for the return.

This translates to aiming at yards for rabbits, pigeons, squirrels, doves, partridge, quail, grouse, ducks, as well as pheasant with a steel shot. The Model 870 Super Magnum comes with a 26-inch vent-rib barrel. Another aspect of the gun is the ventilated rib barrel.

There is a little showmanship, but it’s like riding a bicycle. Once you learn to shuck a pump, you never forget. A big plus to a pump, especially the 870, is that it always works. Throw it in the bottom of a boat, drag it through the mud, use it as a paddle; if the barrel is clear, it will work. And when you do have to use your 870 for a push pole, be assured that cleanup is a breeze.

Instead what you had available were the Turkey/Waterfowl camo or the Waterfowl camo finish versions. Grips, stocks, fore-ends, magazine tubes, barrels, adapters, rails, and other parts were all bolt friendly on an 870. It is over 50 years old and has over ten million produced to this date. At present, the Express line of the 870s is best characterized as very economically priced shotguns. The barrel length measures 26-inches and is finished in matte black coupled with a hardwood stock.

A light-gathering, fiber optic TRUGLO front sight completes this hardcore waterfowl version. Sling swivel studs are also standard on both models and a padded, black sling is included. These XCS shotguns feature the convenient SPEEDFEED I stocks with spring-loaded compartments on each side, making extra shells handy for quicker reloads. This well-designed stock can hold up to four 2¾-inch shells or two 3 or 3½-inch shells and the addition of a patented Remington recoil pad helps tame the recoil of stout 3½-inch waterfowl loads.

Again, nothing fancy or trendy, just proven to work. The barrel bore is not chrome-lined and did appear slightly less smooth than the bore of a recent Wingmaster, but the difference was not great and certainly would not affect performance. The top of the barrel was capped by a normal ¼”-wide flat rib ending with a plain small steel bead sight. If that isn’t enough and you would rather focus on the front of the gun than on the duck, the gun does come with a package of magnetically attached green, white and red glowworm front sights. Fortunately, they detach as easily as they go on. Our Analysis Super Mag weighed 7 pounds 4 ounces with its 28” Rem Choked barrel.

Performance wise, the only issue I’ve encountered are the well documented ‘stuck shell’ failures. Every now and then, the gun will refuse to eject a shell from the chamber using the same amount of physical exertion as usual. It’s quite frustrating, and I am not the only one to experience this issue with the Super Mag. There are mixed diagnoses from ammo quality, powder charge, or just tight chambers. To free the stubborn shell, you have to literally use brute force. Be careful with how hard to slam that gun on the ground however, because a broken extractor is another problem you do not want.

It has been 63 years and millions of shotguns guns later, the mighty Remington 870 Super Mag is still going strong. It is reasonably priced, reliable in the field, and extremely durable. There was a time when Remington did not make available the camo-dipped versions.

There are plenty of high-end waterfowl shotguns on the market, but very few of them can be had for under 400 dollars. When I say waterfowl shotgun, I mean features that are practically a MUST HAVE in the duck blind. Ducks like water, and typically firearms do not. A good duck gun needs to be able to withstand a few dunks each year without rusting to pieces after the season. A synthetic stock made from composites will fare much better than a classic walnut stock. The finish on the metal must also be up to the task for resisting rust.

It’s been the standard for slide-action performance for more than 50 years. And because it’s a Super Magnum, it handles everything from light 2 3/4″ loads to heavy 3 1/2″ magnums, it’s the standard for versatility as well. The 870 Express Super Magnum comes factory installed with a modified Rem Choke.

Then again, the sainted Winchester Model 12 pump had a single action bar, and its durability wasn’t too shabby. The Model 12s pumped more smoothly than the 870s too. The riveted single ejection is considered to be the weak point of the 870, and must be repaired by a qualified gunsmith or Remington factory. Bruce Buck’s most recent book, Shotguns on Analysias, is a collection of 38 of his most recent Gun Analysis columns. At the top of the line is the new American Classic, introduced this year for $1,249. It’s basically a cosmetically upgraded Wingmaster with snappy wood, extra machine engraving with gold fill, an olde-tyme white-line recoil pad and a highly polished blue finish. Remington shows the gun coming in 12, 20 and 28, but at the time of this writing, it was available only in 12. Introduced in 1951, Remington’s 870 pumpgun is now just about eligible for Social Security.

It has the capability to take three 3.5-inch shells or as an alternative, four that measure 2.75 or 3 inches. Otherwise, the customer is responsible for any return shipping costs. When returning an item, please add package tracking and adequate insurance.

These models have a dark flat black from the muzzle to a very spongy butt. One could easily and successfully surprise ducks or geese. One could opt to risk eliminating material with a Dremel tool, acquire a shorter fore-end design such as the Law Enforcement style scattergun, or simply stay with the factory fore-end.
