There is a little showmanship, but it’s like riding a bicycle. Once you learn to shuck a pump, you never forget. A big plus to a pump, especially the 870, is that it always works. Throw it in the bottom of a boat, drag it through the mud, use it as a paddle; if the barrel is clear, it will work. And when you do have to use your 870 for a push pole, be assured that cleanup is a breeze.
Instead what you had available were the Turkey/Waterfowl camo or the Waterfowl camo finish versions. Grips, stocks, fore-ends, magazine tubes, barrels, adapters, rails, and other parts were all bolt friendly on an 870. It is over 50 years old and has over ten million produced to this date. Performance wise, the only issue I’ve encountered are the well documented ‘stuck shell’ failures. Every now and then, the gun will refuse to eject a shell from the chamber using the same amount of physical exertion as usual. It’s quite frustrating, and I am not the only one to experience this issue with the Super Mag. There are mixed diagnoses from ammo quality, powder charge, or just tight chambers. To free the stubborn shell, you have to literally use brute force. Be careful with how hard to slam that gun on the ground however, because a broken extractor is another problem you do not want.
It has been 63 years and millions of shotguns guns later, the mighty Remington 870 Super Mag is still going strong. It is reasonably priced, reliable in the field, and extremely durable. There was a time when Remington did not make available the camo-dipped versions.
