You may as well get something that sparks some pride of ownership. There were no spaces between the receiver and fore-end or where the stock transitioned into the receiver. And the Cerakote finish on the A5 adds durability, which every duck hunter will appreciate. The A5’s pattern percentage fell in the middle of the 17 guns we tested, but the pattern density of the A5 was on the high end of the spectrum. You will notice several pellets are placed in the center of the circle.

I credit the gun’s fit, which is perfect for me, and the Inflex recoil pad, which really does seem to work. Long, light guns are often easy to shoot well, and this gun is no exception. The gun was made in Belgium up until World War II when production moved to Remington, because the Nazis took over the FN plant. Production returned in Belgium after the war but moved to Japan in the 1970s before Browning discontinued the Auto-5. Remington also made a version of the Auto-5, called the Model 11, as did Savage, known as the 720. There were 2¾- and 3-inch magnum models in Standard, Light, and Super Lightweight options for all kinds of shooters. The Auto-5 was used by hunters, clay shooters, police, and military.

Final Thoughts on the Browning A5

The best choke for the Browning A5 is the Patternmaster Code Black. It can deliver tight patterns out to 60 yards on waterfowl. Carlson’s Cremator is another good option, especially their choke tube sets which come with mid and long-range tubes. The Long Beard choke performs extremely well with Winchester XR ammo out of the A5 for turkey hunting. The Cremator line of chokes by Carlson’s is a ported design that patterns well with the A5. This is a Browning extended choke tube set with a Mid Range.725” Diameter and Long Range .715” Diameter choke.

Invector Plus and Invector DS choke tubes are not interchangeable. Invector plus choke tubes are designed for Browning shotguns such as the BPS and Browning Gold. They will not fit the Browning A5 set up for Invector DS. I don’t know about an A- 5 but I would definitely try the Federal flight control wad with a cylinder or imp. It shot better than an other factory load/choke combo in my shotgun.

Other choke tubes will limit you to a lead-only shot. It’s best to carefully read the packaging on your choke tube before patterning your shotgun with a specific type of shot. One of those easy-to-make mistakes with waterfowl hunting is not matching the choke tube to the type of shot being used.

Q: Is a 12 or 20 gauge better for duck hunting?

Even shooting the gun from a Lead Sled, I could feel the comb rising up to hit me in the cheek. Maybe we got a bad one, but the recoil overshadowed the gun’s many good points. It’s basically a Beretta 391, one of the greatest semiautos ever, made in the U.S.A., with a restyled receiver and enlarged controls. The Kick-Off reducer can be removed, so if it hits you the way it hit us, you can shoot this gun without it. There are functional reasons to consider workmanship as well. A gun’s finish should look good, and protect it from the elements.

I tried two of the buckshot choke tubes too, a Buck kicker and something else. Benelli’s Super Black Eagle is now in its third iteration, having become lighter and trimmer with each makeover, and it now comes in 3-inch 12 and 20 gauges, as well as the original 3 ½-inch 12. There is a lot to like about the SBE3, which I have hunted with in the past.

I have hunted with dog clubs that ban and allow slugs. I don’t want anybody shooting my direction with anything, whether it be a sling shot or pellet rifle. If you are going with reloads several on here reload including me. I use 3.5″ and will be glad to share info via p.m. There are some others that have some real good 3″ loads that have posted over in the guns section. The Vector Pro forcing cone reduces stress on the shot column as it moves into the bore, reducing pellet deformation for more uniform patterns and more pellets in the center of the pattern.

All of this is a long-winded way of saying that the 870 won the pump-gun category of our test, and I am delighted that it did. The new owners of Remington—now RemArms—seem to have solved some of the quality-control problems that plagued the guns over the past 15 or so years and the one we tested. Guns leaving the plant undergo much more rigorous inspections than they did under the former ownership. The Speed Load Plus unload feature is convenient too.

The current lineup of Browning A5 shotguns include:

But it’s worth stretching even the tightest budget to move up to the X4, which can hold its own in the blind among the Benellis, Beretta, and Brownings. Our test team—F&S editor-in-chief Colin Kearns, Outdoor Life editor-in-chief Alex Robinson, OL senior editor Joe Genzel, and myself—has hunted all over the U.S., and in a few other countries. We know that waterfowl guns have to be versatile enough to tackle birds from 10-ounce teal up to giant Canada geese and 20-pound tundra swans. We know they have to be tough enough to withstand the elements and reliable, too. It doesn’t matter how rugged or reliable your gun is if you can’t hit what you’re shooting at with it.

If you’re planning on shooting ducks out to further distances then a modified choke is more suitable. This is entirely dependent on what your choke tube is rated for. A few of the choke tubes above are suitable to use with nearly any type of shot including Hevi-Shot and Steel shot.
