If you are camping within the unimproved areas of National Forests, you will be without facilities. Maps are extremely helpful when your are trying to determine which type of public land you are using. As a camping user of these facilities, there are a few things you should know. The state’s more eastern forests are largely ponderosa pine, thick and orange and prone to wildfires, yet still a testament to the Pacific Northwest’s amazing woods. Utah’s big red rock backdrops are complimented by massive orange Ponderosa pines, their puzzle piece bark separated by what appears to be nature’s wood burner, bristly needles contrasting against it all. Cottonwoods grow thicker than Volkswagen Buses where streams or rivers fight to flow, and Stellar’s jays show their black mohawks off while their perfectly blue feathers disappear into the sky behind them.
For me, I would use it to check when a dispersed campsite was last visited. That would help me double-check that the site is still accessible for my vehicle type. Some national forests may also require a campfire permit for national forest camping. Fortunately, these permits are typically free and easy to get online. Some states require you to watch a short video and complete a brief test.

Overnight parking locations almost universally do not allow tent camping, so are best suited for those staying in RVs or vans. I’ve never visited any of them, but they are generally a decent hike from parking areas. They can get crowded but, like in dispersed camping, there are no services and the rangers and usfs do occasionally visit. The Custer Gallatin National Forest allows dispersed camping in most general forest areas. They provide a motor vehicle use map that shows what locations you may disperse car camp. You may not disperse camp in the vicinity of developed recreation areas.
The stay limit in Custer Gallatin National Forest is 16 days, after that, you must move at least 5 miles away and may not return to the original campsite until at least 7 days have passed. One rule to keep in mind is that during the general gun season in the state of Florida, the forest limits dispersed camping to designated campsites. In addition, Osceola National Forest also has a stay limit of 14 days per month.
Don’t park right next to water because in case of flooding you could get stuck, plus it prevents contamination. Don’t park right off of the main highway, not only is it against the rules usually, it is dangerous due to nearby vehicle traffic. Rules will vary depending on which National Forest you will be visiting, but for the most part, they do share a lot of the same rules and regulations, or at least they have very similar ones. Always check the National Forest’s website that you are going to before you leave just to make sure there aren’t any other special rules in effect.
