How Much To Climb Everest?
By the second week in May, teams hope to have an established trail of several miles of fixed ropes leading from basecamp to the summit, with several well-stocked camps along the way. Mount Everest’s popularity soared in the 1990s when international guides began to pioneer commercial trips up the mountain. Despite the risks, Everest draws hundreds of mountaineers from around the world to its slopes each year. In 2018 the Nepal Ministry of Tourism issued 347 individual climbing permits to foreign climbers, and reports that 261 of them summited, along with 302 high-altitude workers. On the North side of the mountain, meanwhile, respected Everest chronicler Alan Arnette estimates that an additional 239 people reached the summited.
Many commercial guiding companies offer expeditions to Everest specifically to climb the Khumbu Icefall and go no further. These commercial expeditions are relatively inexpensive when compared to a full summit expedition. A Khumbu Icefall experience runs at around $5,000 vs. $65,000 for the summit expedition. An analysis of the death rate on Mount Everest between 1980 and 2002 found it had not changed over the years, with about one death for every 10 successful ascents. A sobering statistic for anyone who reaches the summit is that you have approximately a 1 in 20 chance of not making it down again.

As climbers move higher up the mountain and their oxygen intake is reduced, their bodies are increasingly at risk for a number of ailments, including pulmonary edema, cerebral edema, and blood embolisms. The chances of frostbite are also dramatically increased at such altitude as the heart works harder to pump blood around the body delivering oxygen. The life-giving organs are first priority; digits are last. To be fair, in recent years, the marketing of low-cost expeditions is attracting inexperienced climbers. All the puffery from the Nepal government about making Everest safer will have zero impact on this because all involved, government officials to guide companies to guides, benefit from the profit. During training, we make a foray partway up the Khumbu route before heading to Camp I (19,590 ft./5,971 m). We have looked at historical data of the number of foreign climbers who perished on Mt. Everest starting in 2004 (when non-guided attempts on Everest became more prevalent) through the 2016 season. We have excluded 2014 and 2015 when the mountain was shut down early.
Tim Morgan, a commercial pilot writing for Quora says aircraft can fly above 40,000 feet, and hence it is possible to fly over Mount Everest which stands at 29,031.69 feet. However, typical flight routes do not travel above Mount Everest as the mountains create unforgiving weather. Interestingly, the death rate has decreased a bit, from 1.6 percent in the earlier period to 1.0 percent in the more recent period. That said, since the number of climbers has quadrupled, the actual number of deaths has increased.
