Can You Camp At Matthiessen State Park

Mountain bikers are better off camping at the nearby Starved Rock Campgrounds and riding over the Matthiessen to access the trails. If you’re a water lover, Chain O’Lakes State Park is calling your name. It is located in the heart of Illinois’ largest concentration of lakes, just an hour and a half north of the Chicago area. This park is made up of seven lakes, seven picnic areas, four trail systems, and 230 campsites.

Clinton Lake

The Sam Vadalabene Bike Path, a 14.5-mile route from Alton to Grafton, provides some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the country. The route leaves the breathtaking Great River Road, beside the mighty Mississippi River, and concludes at Pere Marquette State Park. Bikers can see looming bluffs as well as maybe behold hairless eagles skyrocketing expenses. The park has five miles of well-marked, well-surfaced hiking trails for a relaxing walk or a vigorous hike. Palos Trail System

The southern shores of Lake Michigan, where the corners of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan converge, offer many opportunities to get outside and enjoy this unique area of the Midwest. The many unusual and beautiful rock formations make a trip to Matthiessen State Park an educational as well as a fun experience. The main canyon, consisting of the Upper and Lower Dells, provides an unusual and interesting walking tour. The Upper Dell begins at Deer Park Lake and continues to Cascade Falls, where the canyon drops 45 feet and the Lower Dell begins. The canyon, formed by water erosion, is approximately one mile long, from Deer Park Lake to the Vermilion River.

It is named for Frederick William Matthiessen, who had originally owned the of property that is at the core of the current park. Two mansions, several cottages, a garage, and a private fire station were built here by Matthiessen for his family. It was an estate that hosted a private park known as “Deer Park”.

There is some smooth singletrack and some amazing elevation changes and beautiful views of the river. Chicago Northwest KOA has planned weekend activities for the kids including wagon rides, face painting, movie nights, flashlight candy hunts, and more. If you want to sightsee in downtown Chicago, the “Metra” train stops at nearby Crystal Lake and Woodstock and can bring you too and from the big city.

Illinois State Parks

Matthiessen, while not always uptaken properly, is a park that anyone living or visiting Illinois, should see. With 5 miles of trails, which alternate between cliffs, canyons, and bluffs, Matthiessen State Park has plenty to offer. This particular trail also includes three waterfalls, along the way.

It is a state crime to eliminate any kind of archaeological or Indigenous American material from any Illinois state park. Matthiessen State Park is absolutely one of those often-overlooked gems that you require to see prior to you die. The last building of the former estate was destroyed in 1981, although a few of the concrete stairways introducing the canyon are of the original construction. Northern Illinois

But during the past 50 years, trees and vegetation have reclaimed naked ridges of subsoil, and stagnant mine ponds gradually have cleared.

They run along the southern banks of the Illinois River and make their way into the many gorges and waterfalls. Depending on your preferences, there is either camping or lodging available upon reservation. Another park on the shores of Lake Michigan and a favorite within two hours of Chicago. Van Buren State Park has 220 campsites that aren’t too far from the lake. Each site has electric hookups, a picnic table, and a fire ring for your camp cooking.

Of course, to access most of this, you’ll have to leave the mountain bike behind. There was no sunflower area in 2019; a wet as well as chilly March and April meant the park could not seed the field. The good news is growing problems were a lot mathiessen state park more desirable this year. The sunflowers grow in the 2nd week of July and optimal by the end of the month. There will likely be just a couple of blossoms left by the 2nd week of August.

This park is only suited for primitive tent camping and has no vehicle access. Each site comes with a fire ring, picnic table, and grill, and drinking water and pit toilets are located nearby. An hour south of Chicago, Kankakee South KOA is a quiet retreat for anyone looking to relax.

Rock Climbing/rapelling is not allowed anywhere in the park. Playgrounds and picnic shelters are first come, first served.

Matthiessen

In the spring, beautiful magenta-colored blossoms erupt on the shooting star plants and the bright orange of the columbine delights the eye. By summertime, a rainbow of color emerges with the yellow partridge pea, the violet spiked lead plants and purple square-stemmed mint plants. You’ll find beautiful rock formations, tons of tree-covered trails, wildlife and plenty of amenities for cyclists. The River Trail, the western most of the web of trails south of the trailhead, offers a serious climb and some technical sections. Be sure to stay on the marked trail, and do not enter the adjacent quarry, which has banned bikes. The orange prairie trail is the longest, zigzagging north of the Vermillion River from its trailhead, which is at the entrance to the park just south of N2459th Road and off of Route 178 .

This area has picnic tables, water fountains and playground equipment, as well as a large parking lot and toilet facilities. An added attraction is the restored fort representative of the fortifications the French built in the Midwest during the 1600s and early 1700s. The main trail to the Cascade Falls area originates in this area.
