Canyon Lake Drive Aka The Hollywood Reservoir

This sign has obviously been photographed endlessly since it first became a permanent landmark in 1923. In those days it said “Hollywoodland” as a marquee for a city and lifestyle representing the movie industry. Later the Santa Fe Railroad bought the line and joined it with their line from San Bernardino. However, the floods of 1884, 1916, and 1927 washed out the tracks, and Santa Fe decided to abandon the line. Soon after the last flood, Temescal Water Company bought the railroad right-of-ways and began construction of a dam across the river for water storage. The Department of Fish and Game restocked the lake, and the heavy rains of 1952 brought the water level high enough that the resort could reopen in 1953. The author and her husband, Donald, then operated the resort until 1968. Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District and Temescal Water Company reached a settlement in 1955 to store 3,000 acre-feet of water in the lake for domestic use.

Those of you visiting the Los Angeles or Hollywood area need to capture at least a few Hollywood sign pics. The vantage points for taking pictures are numerous, though it depends how close you want to get.. If the Statue of Liberty best represents the East Coast, the Hollywood sign in Hollywood, California is certainly a close second for the West Coast.

Redwood pipes in open ditches carried the well water by gravity flow 40 miles to Corona. The company became embroiled in litigation over water rights for many years and, at one time, even owned Lake Elsinore but sold it in 1908 for $30,000. Around 1920, the water levels dropped in the Ethanac wells, and the water became saline and unusable.

While much of that is true, there are many cool ways to explore Hollywood. For example, did you know that the Hollywood Bowl is a park that is open during non-concert days? Then there is Lake Hollywood , In-N-Out Burger, and even the fun 70s-themed bar Good Times at Davey Wayne’s.

After that, the trail circles around a canyon above one of the reservoir’s major inlets and proceeds to the Tahoe Gate near the northeast side of Hollywood Reservoir. Views of the Hollywood Reservoir are scarcer going forward, so linger on Mulholland Dam and enjoy an unchained perspective across the blue water. The broad view from Mulholland Dam includes the Hollywood Sign, impossible to miss in the mountains above the large elegantly shaped lake. The beaming white letters of the Hollywood Sign are above the lake on the far side. Unlike other nearby urban reservoirs, Lake Hollywood has several inlets and bends that give it a natural looking form. In the opposite direction, look south from the dam over pines toward the tall buildings along Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard.

Lake Hollywood Reservoir Walking Trail In Los Angeles

This is my second favorite part because when you turn each corner, you get greeted with a unique view of the Hollywood Sign and the path below. Don’t let that put you off; it’s still a great hike.

The closest you can get to the Hollywood Sign is up and above it and that location is accessible by several hikes within Griffith Park. The overlook of the Sign offers a unique view of the Sign and incredible views of Los Angeles that can span from the ocean to downtown LA and beyond on a clear day.

From the dam you’ll get the great view of the Hollywood Sign without the fence. The lake is also a haven for waterfowl, migrating birds, and hawks. Start the hike at the bottom of the hill where you parked.Head through the gate for the beginning of the actual trail.

We’ll get some better views that are unobstructed shortly.Keep your eyes open for wildlife. Here are some mule deer that I see almost every time that I do this hike.In roughly a mile you’ll reach Mulholland Dam, which formed Lake Hollywood. It was built in 1924 and is still in great condition.And for a laugh, here’s Hollywood Reservoir and Mulholland Dam in the 1974 film “Earthquake” with Charlton Heston. In this scene, the lake is the villain and kills one of the water workers.

Best Free Parking near Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA Hollywood & Highland Parking Structure. There’s a lot to do and see on the boulevard, and most of it is free. That includes the stars on the Walk of Fame, the handprints and footprints at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, and strolling around Hollywood and Highland. The Hollywood sign is said to be haunted by actress Peg Entwistle, who died there in the 1930s. Hollywood has always loved a good story, whether it’s happy or tragic, and the one about Peg Entwistle is definitely the latter. All in all, this a fantastic place to explore in Los Angeles, and it is a great biking trail where you can see a lot and not work too hard.

Looking down at Lake Hollywood, one can spot herons and other waterfowl that make their home there. Built at the same time as Hollywoodland , the Lake is the crown jewel of the water system built by William Mulholland, the chief engineer of Los Angeles. Since I was little I always wanted to see the world. Travel to new places, get to know new cultures, see how other people live. I love beaches and I love discovering tropical destinations.

I recommend you experience the trail, whether it is via foot or bike, and I guarantee you will be excited about seeing this unique part of Los Angeles yourself.
