The snow melt in Garnet Canyon was so fresh and cold, it quickly restored energy to our aching bodies. How Do I Train To Hike The Grand Tetons?
If you’re doing the climb un-guided, you’ll need the above skills plus backpacking and alpine trad climbing expertise. This includes setting up trad anchors, rappelling, and extensive route finding. You’ll need to be self-sufficient on an unguided climb, and your pack will likely weigh far more than if you went on a guided climb. In fact, the Grand is not an especially difficult summit to reach.

We reached the lower saddle, stopped for lunch, and took inventory of the weather. So far we had been thoroughly blessed with bluebird skies all day. Grand Teton is notorious for having very fast changing weather with afternoon thunderstorms frequenting the summer months. The forecast had called for gusty weather, but until we had reached the saddle, we had no idea what we were in for.

I did it with some friends a couple of years ago, and while the hike to the saddle was pretty miserable, it was doable for all for us with a solid cardio level.

Like the 4- day ascent, The 3-day itinerary is for folks who want a premier mountaineering experience, but don’t have time to spend 4 days on the mountain. All participants will be required to take a 1-day Grand Teton Prep Class. A climbing permit is not required for mountaineering, but climbers on overnight trips must have a backcountry camping permit to camp or bivouac.
A fall on steep snow and failure to self-arrest with an ice axe is the number one cause of injury and death. Whether traveling across snow or climbing a peak, bring the right gear and know how to use it. Many peaks in the Teton Range are technical climbs and require the proper equipment and experience.
