The river was flowing, but it was too low for its gurgling to reach across the campground to where our site was. Looking at the park maps, you might not think you’d hear the trucks and cars that travel the interstate 24/7. But as Theodore Roosevelt Superintendent Valerie Naylor points out, those sounds can travel quickly up the Little Missouri River Valley when conditions are just right. Should that area be full, half an hour west of Medora is the Camel Hump Lake Wildlife Management Area, which offers free camping as well–though not on most Tuesdays and Wednesdays. All plants, wildlife, natural, and cultural features are protected. Hunting, feeding wildlife, and chasing or harassing wildlife, including approaching wildlife on horseback, is prohibited. Roundup Group Horse Camp

This lovely park is right off of I-94 and only 37 minutes east of Medora, where you’ll find the sourthern entrance to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It’s located in a prairie area of North Dakota, and although the town is very rural, it does offer all the standard amenities. Located just off I-94, Buffalo Gap Campground is only one mile from the town of Medora, ND and the south entrance to Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

The Dickinson Theodore Roosevelt Airport is closer , but it’s easier to get a flight into Bismarck and drive to Medora, the nearest town to TRNP. In 1884, Roosevelt himself retreated to this wide-open country after his wife, Alice Lee, and his mother, Mittie, died only hours apart. “I have always said I would not have been President had it not been for my experience in North Dakota,” he once noted.
