The Christian Brothers area is a large group of rock spires in between Asterisk Pass and The Dihedrals. The walls that make up the Christian Brothers area are the Prophet Wall, The Beard, Testament Slab and the Combination Blocks. Another area that’s seen recent development is the north end of the Bank, in the Piggy Bank and Bank Rob areas. There are dozens of newer climbs from 5.7 to 5.12c, with the majority in the 5.9 to 5.10 range— the routes cover the territory roughly from Buns to Pretty Boy Floyd. What kind of rock is in Smith Rock?
Geology. The geology of Smith Rocks is volcanic. It is made up of layers of recent basalt flows overlaying older Clarno ash and tuff formations. Approximately 30 million years ago, a large caldera was formed (Crooked River caldera) when overlying rock collapsed into an underground lava chamber.
Smith Rock hosts cold winters and hot summers, with winter temperatures dropping below freezing and summer temperatures occasionally reaching above 100 degrees. For this reason, the peak of the climbing season is generally mid-late spring and early autumn. These times of year will provide you with the most comfortable temperatures for climbing, but they’re also the most crowded.
Climbing Partners
It was just John and no other serious accidents. Or even the Red Rocks, there’s not a really cohesive organization, local climbing… I’m trying to think what they call them; it’s an LCO. “Local Climbing Organization” that really kind of gathers everybody together and make these kind of important decisions collectively and stuff.
The town of Terrebonne has a decent gocery store, gas stations, and even a decent espresso stand . Not to be missed is the climber-owned Terrebonne Depot for food, wine, beer, and cocktails; it’s hard to beat a buffalo cheeseburger and a beer here after a day in the park. The more compact Smith Rock Select is a great short list of the mega-classics here. Great pictures, clear topos, and good descriptions make for easy routefinding, but it’s pretty brief in scope and is by no means comprehensive.
Smith Rock Groups
He and his wife Lisa climb, mountain bike, kayak, paddleboard, etc. Other parts of the country, when sport climbing was imported from Europe, particularly from France in the mid-1980s, in areas like Smith Rocks, there was a guy named Alan Watts who put up hundreds of sport climbs on rappel. And throughout America, sport climbing areas started to become developed, where people would rappel down and put in the bolts, rehearse the climbs before they led, the protection was good, the bolts were closely spaced together.
When did rock climbing become a sport?
Rock Climbing really became a separate sports activity in the United States in 1950s. One of the most famous climbs at the time was the first ascent of the Nose on El Capitan in 1958. The team, led by Warren Harding, took more than a month to reach the summit using aid techniques.

Why is it called Smith Rock?
SOME SAY IT WAS NAMED AFTER JOHN SMITH, LINN COUNTY SHERIFF AND OREGON LEGISLATOR IN THE 1850s and 1860s. A newspaper article in 1867 in the Albany States Right Democrat credits Smith with “discovering” Smith’s Rock. He had been traveling through the area while working for the Warm Springs Indian Agency.
There was a period when I was younger, I wasn’t very conservative or safe, and nobody really was. When you’re, you know, that 20 to 25 year old, we just really want to push it and it’s really dangerous. But, you know, you’re really good and you’re really confident and you done your homework and, you know, it’s not conservative climbing and it’s not all that safe. But if you’ve prepared for it, it’s as safe as you can possibly make it.
Why is it called sport climbing?
Many early sport routes were bolted on lead by the first ascender: a “traditional” approach. One could say that it became “sport” climbing when routes started to get bolted from the top (hanging on a rope).
I know we went eighty five miles down to San Juan, six or seven major rapids. I made them all but the last one and I wiped out on the last one, but we made it all the way. Kayaking is described as a sport where you get real wet real fast. We were one of those last ones to cross Hite Ferry on the old Colorado ferry at Hite. And then we had to bike eighty-five miles up a sand wash to Hanksville.
When and where did mountaineering start as a sport?

In 1935, the first ever soft-soled climbing shoe was produced by Pierre Allain – the first man to boulder at Fontainebleau. In 1923, the standard numerical grading system was invented by Willo Welzenbach, which graded climbs from I to VI. By 1922, the hardest climb in the world was named “Rostkante” which was on Hauptwiesenstein, Elbe Sandstone Mountains, and was rated at 5.10d. The same year, a 5.10b on the Elbe Sandstone Mountains named “Illmerweg” was ascended by Paul Illmer and his group. In 1916, the first ever E1 was climbed in Derbyshire, England.
What kinds of routes you were climbing so to give us a sense of what it was like to come out here in the 70s. But that I was in their climbing and mountaineering program and met other instructors who climbed. And we would go to Joshua Tree for our break in the spring, in the fall, or more specifically, the fall. The very first time I went to “climb” for pleasure at Joshua tree was in the spring of 1984.
Why is lead climbing called lead climbing?

In Trad there aren’t bolts in the wall to clip to so the leader will take protection like cams and nuts with them to place into cracks and seams in the wall. Most of the time climbers would call that a “Trad lead” with a Sport lead climb just called a “Lead” climb.
