Stop when the saw cuts all the way through the wood. Hold the scrap wood firmly against the fence with one hand. Position the fence in front of your dominant hand at the edge of the table.
A featherboard could be used instead of the second push stick, but unless you make a lot of similar cuts, the featherboard is a bit too much bother to set up. The rip fence that comes standard on every table saw is good for doing what it was designed for, making rip cuts. A good rip fence is rock solid, doesn’t move out of calibration after a few uses and is easy to adjust when needed. To avoid binding and kickbacks when you’re cutting, always push the workpiece and fence completely past the blade.

Cut accurate dadoes without a dado blade by making successive passes over the blade. Screw a 1×3 fence extension to your miter gauge and make a saw kerf in it. If your hand will get too close to the saw, such as when cutting a board lengthwise, switch to a wood stick. Use the stick to hold the board down and finish pushing it over the blade. Stand behind the wood you are cutting instead of the saw blade. Take a couple of steps to the side toward your dominant hand. Position yourself right behind the miter gauge instead of the saw blade.
Generally, a saw that is capable of cutting precisely tends to cost $400 and up – this is true for benchtop saws and contractor saws. I recommend printing the gears with an ink jet printer. Even cheap ink jet printers print very scale accurate but not all laser printers are accurate.
