Backpacking Light helps hikers and other backcountry enthusiasts overcome their barriers to living a life outside in Wild Places. You can lock it to prevent accidental battery drain. It’s easy to use once you figure out the one button system. The LOCK position prevents the lamp from accidentally switching on, but does not turn it off. The Tikka is designed to be weather resistant – the seal inside the battery compartment does a good job of keeping moisture at bay. Avoid any prolonged contact of grease with the lens.
I’ve had many problems with a storm and spot headlamps, nothing like getting benighted only to find out their stupid “lock” feature didn’t work and your batteries are dead. The Black Diamond Sprinter is the ideal headlamp for runners, whether it’s pavement or trail. With a bright white spot beam in the front and a highly visible blinking or solid red in the back, the Sprinter makes sure you are visible, and the path is visible for you. I really love the newer of the two that I have, the controls are intuitive, it lasts a long time, and I can easily night hike with it if I need to. Most of the time around camp I turn it on and dim it all the way down and leave it there.
Now producing 350 lumens of light, we’ve also updated the user interface by adding a second switch for easy lens mode selection. First off, this headlamp comes with two powerful lights joined by an electrical cable. The front white spot beam can be adjusted for brightness, and with the PowerTap touch-sensitive button on the side it can switch between any two programmed variations of your choice. With its exceptionally bright beam, USB rechargeable battery, dimming capability, and flashing red taillight option, you’ll surely be able to see and be seen in all the ways you desire.

Quick Answer: How To Change Petzl Headlamp Battery
Serious climbing headlamps have maybe two settings — basic and high. This has at least 6 settings based on combinations of switch press, hold and side tap. The iSEO 5R is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack. My first good headlamp was the BD Storm which I replaced with this new Spot the second it came out. It was such an improvement over the Storm in every way.
Just be sure you know whether you’re purchasing the 2016 model or the new 2017 model. It is difficult to use at first, but as with all things, it gets easier once you familiarize yourself with it. If you prefer a simpler headlamp, you might consider something like the Princeton Tec Sync, which uses a turning knob.
Other Black Diamond Headlamps
After topping an unfamiliar ridge, Spot threw enough light to get re-oriented and cause the compass to self correct. The lamp ate probably 100 yards/meters of darkness to reveal an image of recognizable features, without which a certain level of anxiety might not have stayed within the range of fun. The latest electronic gadget that’s come through the office is the Sprinter Rechargeable Headlamp by Black Diamond. The Sprinter is unique in that it has dual lights, one in the front, understandably, and one in the back, with various modes and levels of brightness. The Sprinter is specifically geared towards and has most features that one would need. It’s the anywhere and everywhere headlamp when you need it the most.
Life is out there, and that’s where we want to be. I can personally attest of this from a recent trip to the lush island of Madeira. Famous for its ‘levada’ walks, it is not uncommon to go through hundred meters long dark tunnels dripping with water, or duck under a waterfall to continue your progression.
I’ve had a soft spot in my heart for the company ever since a Black Diamond Raven Pro Ice Axe saved me from broken legs during an unintended and uncontrolled glissade on Mount Whitney. I was about to buy a BD Spot to replace my cheap headlamp I bought in a 3 pack at Costco for $19.99. My Costco lights aren’t very bright, but have held up pretty good for what I paid. Honestly not much but one of my major gripes is that you cannot use the ReVolt to charge other rechargeable batteries than the ones sold by Black Diamond.
The designers of this product must have used it a lot to understand the best ways to improve it. The lamp comes back on in the previous mode–no need to cycle through settings. Depressing and holding the switch to dim/brighten makes huge sense to me vs. clicking a bunch of times.
It’s now rated at 325 lumens, making it 62 percent brighter than the 2016 edition. The big change in 2019 is that BD has added a second switch. This should make operation much more intuitive, and it will no longer be necessary to carry the user manual with you. I use it for up to two hours at a time in drenching rain and have had no problems. Overall this is a great general light and I am super happy with it. I didn’t see anything about PowerTap when I read the instructions, and was baffled as to why my light occasionally went SUPER BRIGHT for no apparent reason and needed dimming again.
Type A users like me can click into severe frustration until the system fails and will only produce a single setting. The old Spot has 3 brightness levels in 2 modes requiring a click for each. When I’d click too many times or not be able to tell what setting I’ve clicked to, the lamp cycles to the other mode, requiring more clicking to get back. Old Spot was worth the trouble for how bright it is.
Until then, I don’t go in the dark without this light. If you are looking for cheaper headlamps, you have so many options. If you want the brightest one, then be prepared to pay a little more money for something else.
When you turn off your Spot headlamp and turn it back on, the brightness memory feature will use whatever brightness level you left it on. For people who want the maximum brightness, they can check out the Fenix HM65R which features a “turbo” mode that outputs 1400 lumens. A 3500mAh rechargeable battery is also used but can be substituted with two CR123A batteries. It is IP68 dustproof/waterproof and built with a strong magnesium alloy for impact resistance but comes in at around $95 which is a lot to spend. Also, note that there are many counterfeit Fenix products on the market. My 35-hour usage estimate does not include however many hours the lamp was on accidentally.
This one is perfect for using at the campsite or when you are working with something in front of you or while reading. The much respected IP67 rating that the Storm 400 has makes this stand out against the crowd. And while it might seem only suitable for people into extreme outdoor activities, this headlamp is perfect for anyone. You never really know when you’re going to get caught out in a storm or need to deal with water. Also, kayakers and boaters will appreciate that their headlamp will stay functional should it get any water contact. Other similarly priced headlamps are mostly IPX4 rated which means that they are splash resistant.
