If you choose to ascend Matterhorn from the Swiss side, the starting point will be the village of Zermatt, located in the German-speaking canton of the Valais, in the country’s south. International flights usually arrive at Geneva or Zurich airports, which offer hourly rail connections to Zermatt (3 to 4 hours-long). Private cars are not allowed in the town; if you are traveling by car, the closest you can get is the municipality of Täsch, from which you must travel the remaining 7 kilometers by train or taxi. Driving time to Zermatt from Geneva, Zurich or Milan is 3 and a half to 4 and a half hours. If you decide to climb it from the Italian side, you will have to travel to the resort town ofBreuil-Cervinia, located in the beautiful Aosta Valley, in the commune of Valtournenche, in the country’s northwest. Cervinia is about 30 kilometers from the main Aosta Valley motorway (A5 Torino-Aosta), so it is easily accessible by car and public transportation.
For this reason, the Matterhorn has been popularized as an African mountain. The Austroalpine nappes are mostly common in the Eastern Alps. The famous summit has become a selling point for typical Swiss products such as chocolate, cheese and muesli packaging. But far from being confined to Switzerland, the image of the Matterhorn is used on all sorts of products in many different countries. It was used on a beer can in Canada as far back as 1937; it’s been used on men’s swimwear in Italy, shaving foam in the United States and packs of cigarettes in Malaysia. These are just some of the items curated by the Swiss Alpine Museum in an exhibition up on the Gornergrat.

How Was The Matterhorn Formed?

On this attempt, however, a storm soon developed and they were stuck halfway to the summit. They remained there for 26 hours in their tent before giving up.
Rising 9500 feet above the valley, the Matterhorn, like Mont Blanc, stands as one of the great symbols of mountaineering achievement. The section of the Pennine Alps where Matterhorn is located comprises most of Western Europe’s highest mountains. Therefore, besides Matterhorn, there are several other mountaineering and trekking activities available in the area, some of which can also serve as acclimatization before your ascent.
So it stands to reason that climbing the Matterhorn is a major goal of many climbers. We will take a look at what it takes to climb the Hornli Ridge from Zermatt, Switzerland, by far the peak’s most popular route. Shutting the mountain down entirely may not be the answer, but educating climbers about the dangers can help the situation. Chances are however, these once safe and well-trodden peaks are only going to continue to become more treacherous. The greater number came from the Valais up the Visp valley to Zermatt. Many fans believe that the distinctive triangular shape of the Toblerone chocolates is also a nod to Matterhorn.
Yesterday I shared a beautiful and compelling video from one of the most iconic mountains in Europe. In the text that accompanied that video I noted that Mont Blanc is one of the peaks responsible for the birth of mountaineering. I have guided experienced climbers who are not sure footed and non-climbers who are surefooted. This simply means the ability to be agile and secure when scrambling on rock, ice and snow. This ability can be learned by practising scrambling and easy climbing.
Be mindful that, due to the lack of a water source, there is no drinkable water available in the refuges. You should carry your own water bottle or boil mountain water before using it. The Dragonspine mountain in Genshin Impact was designed with reference to the Matterhorn. On 9 January 2022, it was announced that the milestone had been reached and they would light up the Teleport Waypoint on January 13. Thanks to its shape and its free-standing position, the Matterhorn is considered to be the epitome of a mountain.
Having overcome these difficulties the group finally arrived in the summit area, with Croz and Whymper reaching the top first. Whymper and party left Zermatt early in the morning of 13 July 1865, heading to the foot of the Hörnli ridge, which they reached 6 hours later (approximately where the Hörnli Hut is situated today). Meanwhile, Carrel and six other Italian guides also began their ascent of the Italian ridge. Most of the base of the mountain lies in the Tsaté nappe, a remnant of the Piedmont-Liguria oceanic crust and its sedimentary rocks.

The mountain is also known by the locals as “ds Hore” (“the peak”, in Zermatt dialect) or “ds Horu” .
