For loading, there’s a rigid Blackburn SS rear rack, the standard for high-performance touring. On stage 2 of the 2020 Tour de France, Julian Alaphillipe won on clinchers. The year before, his Deceuninck–Quick-Step teammate Fabio Jakobsen won a stage at the Tour of California on tubeless tires. Bike manufacturers like Peugeot in France and Kestrel in the U.S. began experimenting with carbon frames in the early 1970s. There was a steep learning curve and it would be several years before modern monocoque frames came to market.

The carbon tubes were made by a French company, TVT, which combined Kevlar with layers of woven carbon fiber for additional strength. The tubes were then bonded with epoxy into aluminum lugs. With WorldTour teams using the equipment provided by their sponsors, many of the brands that are racking up stage wins in the modern race are still comparatively young compared to the Tour de France itself. But even while certain brands sponsor multiple teams, some of which are dominant, these young teams may never rack up the same number of TDF general classification wins as many of the now-defunct bike brands of old. It’s difficult to tell how many teams have switched totally to tubeless without a very close look at their tyres or a chat with their mechanics. Tubs were always cited for the lower weight of the rims and their better ability to run flat. Disc brake tubeless wheels now are approaching weight parity with tubs of old, and so tubeless tech does seem to be winning over the notoriously conservative pros. It’s likely their mechanics are happy at the change too, not having to glue endless tyres onto rims before each race.

The result are unresponsice and “dead” riding characteristics in the finished bicycle. Torch brazing preserves the tubing’s integrity for a lively ride and also permits better quality control for better riding performance. Until then, aero frame designs had mostly been limited to track, time trial, and triathlon bikes. Cervélo sponsored Team CSC, and several CSC riders used the Soloist on flat stages of the Tour. Road race bike haven’t changed — two wheels, a frame, and pedals.

Made overseas to Schwinn’s own design and under the strictest direction of Schwinn engineers. With its “teardrop-shaped tubes” and a claimed weight of 15 pounds, thanks to FACT 11r carbon, the Venge was the company’s first aero-specific superbike. LeMond’s critics called these new devices ugly and unsafe, questioning if they would make any difference. But he won the stage and, more importantly, beat Fignon in the general classification by eight seconds — the smallest winning margin in history. With an average speed of 54.545kp/h (34.52mph), it was also the fastest time trial ever ridden in the Tour. The Tour was a good example of how there is life after the motorcar and busy streets.
