Pit Bike Kick Start Not Catching

Now, how would I polish the splines – with a wire wheel or something? I guess they just wore out over time. When closed, they should seal the combustion chamber. To check lash, remove the valve caps, and using a feeler gauge check the spec.

Any failure in the valve train will cause the valves and piston to meet. It’s when your engine cylinder fills with a liquid, and since a liquid isn’t compressible, the piston can’t move. Replacing the top end is doable, but you’ll need to check the lower end bearings.

SSR125 clutch or kick start problems…. Hopefully you can help

There could be a few reasons to not buy a dirt bike, but there are a number of reasons why people love dirt bikes. It offers you a new hobby, a quality time with family and lots of friends. Mark the position of the kick starter on the kick starter shaft with a marker so that way you know the exact position of it when you go to put it back.

Were you thinking if the splines were damaged, the ratchet gear could slip a little on the shaft? I looked at the old broken shaft, and those splines are still in good shape, so probably the ratchet gear is ok too. But I will be sure to look at them when I take it apart to put the new spring in. I am going to order that spring you’re pointing to in the picture.

Tight and fix the clutch properly

If there are burs or slightly damaged splines the ratchet can’t re-engage the teeth on the shaft because the spring can’t overcome the interference of the burs. You may try polishing the splines to verify this. New parts will often have the burs I speak of.

This should loosen up the clutch pedal assembly. This should also make the Kickstarter release easy to operate. When the kick starter is removed, clean the area of the seal with contact cleaner and a rag. There are a few different ways to remove this seal now depending on your application. Begin by cleaning the area of the kick starter, next remove the bolt from the kick starter. Now some of the bolts are going to be Allen bolt or a hex head bolt or they might even be a pinch bolt that holds the kick starter on the index.

kickstart locked up! help!

I hope whoever picked those parts at the Kaw whare house just pulled the wrong part accidentally. Kick start the engine and check spark strength. For that, we’ll need to run one more test – a wet test. The compression valve of a cylinder is measured in PSI , and each engine maker will have their own new factory spec. As a ballpark, an engine will struggle to operate below 100 psi, but you can easily check your engine’s spec with a google search.

The oil would have been lost once they drilled through the case. I found a lot of swarf in the silicone and a chunk of aluminium in the gears. Once I removed those items the kick starter operates freely and compression is apparent. The offending hole has been cleaned and filled with QuikSteel. This should provide an adequate seal and is good to 260C / 500F.

Starter spins but doesn’t turn the engine.

Two-stroke engines don’t have valves. This section only applies to four-stroke motors. You already know the importance of compression, and you know how to test it. A lack of compression can be caused by a top-end problem too. A seized engine occurs when the internal components get so hot they fuse together to become one.

They can last hundreds of hours if the bike isn’t ridden hard, but if the edges are chipped off, it could let unwanted air through and not allow the bike to start. If it is TCI system, on the other hand, then once the battery is dead, kick start is as good as dead too. You can remove the kick starter and be mindful to keep track of any washers that may come off with it. It’s a long shot, but there is a spring that moves the kick start gear into mesh with another gear that meshes with the clutch gear.

Kick starter doesn’t always catch

If you don’t see anything, be prepared to spend some time swapping out parts if you don’t want to replace everything in the electrical system. Look for a small, blueish spark of electricity on the end of the spark plug. For less than 100 bucks you can clean all the dirty carbs for years to come without having to pay a shop to do it. This can be done in a matter of minutes by removing the float bowl on the bottom of the carburetor.

Designs vary, though, so you really need to do a search for a manual, like a Clymer manual. That should not only tell you how to hook up the starter, but what else you may find in there. Plus, a good manual is really one of the more important tools to have, if you’re going to do any more work on it.

Spark Makes Things Happen

Is there an adjustment for this or does it mean pulling the whole crankcase apart. I know on some CR’s the spring on the kickstarter shaft will get weak, and cause what you are describing. Ive heard of people just stretching the spring a little to solve the problem, or you could try a new one. When it does actually kik and turn the engine over it starts first time . Hate to say it, but I think you have to get inside the cover for another look. I can’t find a gear that fits on the spline on the starter motor, which makes me think that spline actually drives gear #1, which rotates on pin #2.

If the engine is flooded, it’s best to wait for the fuel to evaporate. Replace them if they are damaged, it leaks, have deteriorated or are missing with new parts/assembly. A the gas line that is cracked or plugged needs to be replaced as well. The gear on the back of the clutch basket. Pressed in and is now spinning free upon each kick. Have you checked your Graffix lately?

Like I say and “binge” did too ‘He more experienced than me! Dont panic tho as you may not have the same problem – Binge and I recon you should fist take the case off just slide it off and check to see anything out of palce. Straigth away you will see if there any wrong or not right) Good starting point. I’d put money on it not being seized. I’ve had this problem when I first got my moped.

Replace old parts of the old dirt bike

So basically to start the engine, first, you have to set it in the proper position, just behind TDC. So TDC is when you try to push the kick starter lever, but you can’t, because you feel resistance and you can’t push it further without using more strength. There are many different causes of kickstart. If you take your bike in to be repaired, a mechanic will check the reason for the kickstart. This is the easiest and most common way to get rid of kickstart on dirt bikes. Poor aerodynamics can also cause kick-start issues with dirt bikes.
