For those who are unaware, Mossberg is one of the… It is mostly available in a 12-gauge barrel receiver, however, you can also find 26-inch and 28-inch barrels, if you do your homework well. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the most expensive on the list.
The long recoil system is no longer made, so they are relatively rare on clay ranges. Designed when 28 gram 12-gauge loads were rare, they tend to need at least 32 gram cartridges to cycle reliably. Inertia operated semis also rely on the recoil energy of the cartridge, but the barrel is fixed and only the breech bolt travels backwards. As with most other guns, the breech bolt is solidly locked to the barrel extension hood when the cartridge is fired.

The Problem with Overtraining Your Dog
This entry was posted in Shotgun related and tagged clay targets, SxS. If you want to look your best while breaking birds, this might be the gun for you. Although Guerini USA is only in its fifteenth year, the company has developed a reputation for making excellent guns and delivering first-rate customer service. As the barrel moves forward the fired case is ejected.
I am currently shooting a beretta a390st as my competition clays gun, I have aways used single barrel guns pumps and autos. Only time i owned a O/U was a stoger 16ga which was a nightmare, misfired 90% of the time and I ended up bringing it back. But have tried a few other O/U unders which I seem to shoot well.
Semi-Auto vs. Over/Under…..?
Now there’s a dedicated target version available with all the advantages of the A300 configured for clay games. It comes with a 30 inch barrel with front and middle beads on a widened rib and three extended choke tubes. One shotgun can do it all, if you choose it wisely. In fact, if hunting is your primary interest, shooting clays with your hunting gun will give you the very best practice.
The Benelli is renowned for toughness and durability. Another great all-rounder which is more than capable on the marsh or the clay ground. Pictured is the M2 model with hard wearing Cerakote finish, making it pretty much bombproof. With the right ammo, it has extremely fast recovery time, which is important on a lot of true pairs. There are some O/U’s you will shoot well and some you won’t, same goes for Semi-auto’s.

The stock is both bulkier and has a higher comb so you can “float” targets with the gun. Target shooting is limited to 2¾-inch shells only. Three-inch loads provide extra punch for longer shots at turkeys, waterfowl, and upland birds. Most hunting guns have 3-inch chambers that let you shoot 2¾- and 3-inch shells interchangeably. I’m a serious clays shooter, but if I were just starting out and wanted a mechanically reliable, yet relatively inexpensive shotgun, I would select a CZ-USA 612 Field.
The method by which a gun’s semi-auto mechanism is operated, combined with its weight, determines the degree of smoothness a particular model offers. Let me know what distance you are trying to break the birds at and I’ll give you some shot/choke combinations to try. Ultimately, the patterning board is your best friend though. Modified, Light Modified and Full chokes will certainly keep a tighter pattern longer distances than improved cylinder, but it may not be the only reason for not breaking them at longer distances. My shot selection is based on three of the considerations – target type, target presentation and distance. First, if I plan to break the target within 25 yards, that barrel gets a #9 shell.

Pick your favorite and get to the range because getting the perfect over-under shotgun has never been this easy. Benelli has virtually reinvented the over-under shotgun design with this stylish and sleek model. You’ll still pay a pretty penny for the over-under Instinct at a price between $1,550 and $1,800. But with the quickness and reliability of this shotgun, we think it’s worth your money. The Browning shotguns are a fan favorite all around the country. They are a little bit more costly than other shotguns on the market, but their top-notch quality is worth every penny.
At one time we all steered women into gas semi-autos because we didn’t have the loads, barrel technology and stock configurations we have today. Today, I have 95-pound girls shooting several days a week with O/Us. No one, including females, need choose a semi-auto out of recoil fear of an over-and-under shotgun. Women have specific fit needs that for too many years were answered with “shrink it and pink it” cheap youth guns. We have stocks today that address women’s fit needs very effectively and once dialed in with proper length, pad and loads will be fine.

The full-sized SXP Trap comes in 12-gauge with a 30- or 32-inch barrel, while the Compact version is available in either 12- or 20-gauge with 28- or 30-inch barrel. There is no doubt that a fixed breech shotgun (pump, bolt, break-open, etc.) pounds you harder than a gas operated semi-automatic. There is nothing about the action that absorbs recoil, lengthens its pulse, or takes the edge off it in any way.
That’s not to say that a weekend warrior won’t shoot a SxS as well or better than an O/U or auto. By definition, the WW doesn’t have cutting edge talent. He’s operating at half throttle, an area where equipment doesn’t matter all that much. The aiming errors tend to be gross, not subtle as they are with a national champion. As to the super sport or the beretta i do not know, i have never handled either.
Choke Selection
A fresh cartridge is released from the magazine tube and the cartridge lifter is tripped, flipping upward to present the cartridge in front of the breech bolt. The bolt is then forced forward by a separate spring located in the stock, often termed the ‘rat’s tail’ . Basically you could shoot skeet with it, but the results won’t be optimal. If you’re not competing or taking the sport really seriously, the gun should work just fine – just expect to miss more than you should.
The energy now stored in the spring forces the entire bolt back to cycle the action. Short recoil is similar to this, but the barrel only moves back a short distance, and imparts some of its energy to the breech bolt. The barrel’s travel is then arrested, while the bolt unlocks and continues travelling backwards to cycle the mechanism in the same way as the Long recoil system. The Beretta UGB two-shot semi-auto operates in this way.
Thread: semi-auto for sporting clays
I’ve been clay shooting for over 30 years and always used a semi auto until the last few years, but I will always have one. Yes cleaning takes a few minutes longer and many older ones only like 28g cartridges, but I love my old 301. A lot of grounds now make you put an orange saftey flag or plug in them until you are on the pad. Safety is no accident so I’m happy to comply with that when I use my auto. About the only down side to an auto is you only have one barel so on some sporting layouts you have to compromise on which choke to use.

The 20 and 12 gauges come with 26-inch and 28-inch barrels. Built specifically for clays shooters, the 692 is as functional and as it is handsome. It’s customizable with an adjustable single selective trigger, as well as an adjustable cast, an optional adjustable comb and even an adjustable extraction-ejection. The F16 comes with the lowest profile receiver on the market and a low center of gravity for a fast, smooth swing. The weight in both the stock and the barrel can be adjusted with Blaser’s optional balancer system and the F16 is available in three wood grades. The CX features lengthened forcing cones, three extended Invector Plus choke tubes, a 60/40 point-of-impact and 32-inch barrels.
