It’s arguably no longer a stretch to say that being a streamer – or YouTuber – is an unviable career path. A decade ago, perhaps, most of us would have considered the idea that making a living from making videos as fanciful, but the economics have changed.
Of course, there is a very, very big caveat: Just like becoming a movie star or professional athlete, the numbers that make it are vastly smaller than those that don’t. You need a lot of luck, determination, and a little bit of talent.
YouTube and similar streaming platforms have plenty of niche topics. You’ll find content creators doing everything from tutorials on how to change a tire to playing online casino games, yet one YouTuber, Luke Nichols, found fame doing something that readers of this site will recognize – showcasing the great outdoors.

The Outdoor Boys Exploded In Popularity
Nichols, who started with a fishing channel called Catfish & Carp, had some initial success, but his popularity exploded when he launched The Outdoor Boys, a channel dedicated to survival in the wilderness, most often in Alaska.
If you haven’t seen an Outdoor Boys video, it can be difficult to explain its charms. Each video is about 30 minutes long on average, and it will effectively see Nichols head to a wild region – often in freezing temperatures and snow – and show his audience how to survive it. One week, he might stay in a make-shift cabin, the next, he’ll show you how to survive in freezing temperatures without shelter, and the next after that, he might show you how to build an igloo-type structure.
The interesting thing about the Outdoor Boys is that there is very little dialogue. Nichols may chat to the camera for a few minutes while cooking dinner – moose ribs, for example – and he might drop in for a quick progress update now and again as he builds his shelter and tends to the fire, but there’s not an awful lot of talk across the videos. The majority is Nichols digging, sawing, walking, and so on.
It Was Pure Comfort Viewing
Yet, the lack of dialogue is part of the charm; there is a comfort in watching Nichols working away in the snowdrifts. It is, almost always, mesmerizing. The Outdoor Boys is something that you watch when searching for comfort. Yes, it’s not a great idea to fall asleep while watching something on your phone or tablet, but we’re sure a lot of viewers do that. The beautiful scenery, the pace of the video, and Nichols ‘ breathless working away until the shelter – and his dinner – is ready is a modern lullaby.

While the wilderness is the star of the show, it would not be the same without its host. Nichols certainly respects his surroundings, and you can see he is somewhat in awe of nature. That passion cannot be bluffed, and it is one of the reasons that viewers find him so endearing.
In 2025, Nichols announced that he was ending the Outdoor Boys. The most apparent reasons were to protect his privacy, as it was clear he and his family found the new-found fame somewhat oppressing. He was gaining millions of followers in the lead-up to his departure from the channel. Yet, it also feels like he left at the right time, leaving a legacy that is likely to have inspired millions of others to get outside and explore this beautiful planet of ours.
