For long-term use as is, the shooter would need shorter rings or a strap-on cheekpiece pad, or a different stock. We would also have liked more capacity for both the Savage and the CZ, which came with 5-round stick magazines compared to the rotary Ruger’s 10-round magazine. Also, for all three, we would have liked at least one extra mag to have come with the rifle. If you decide to buy one of these rifles, plan to buy three to five more magazines at the outset. Also, we believe the CZ and the Savage have a small disadvantage in that the magazines aren’t flush-fit like the Ruger’s.

We otherwise had no failures to fire or extract, and ejected brass shot close or far depending on how hard we worked the bolt. We’d like to see a thin rubber buttpad to create more stick on the shoulder, but some will argue that’s exactly what they don’t want. As we noted a couple of issues ago, the shooting community is seeing more and more factory-supplied threaded barrels on rifles to allow application of muzzle devices, including sound suppressors. Our shooters noted a marked difference in recoil at the shoulder, and, perhaps more profound, the lack of muzzle blast and report created better shooter conditions behind the gun. A lot of things can contribute to flinching and missing, and noise and a sharp push into the shoulder are two of them.

Installing a riflescope was easy because it came fitted with a 1913 rail, a plus over the non-Pic rail on the Ruger and a double plus over the Remington, which required fitting bases on the drilled-and-tapped action. We had no issues installing or removing the Rugged suppressor on the 5⁄8×24 threaded barrel. We liked the big BA-style bolt handle better than the others because it provided a lot of leverage opening and closing the action. We had some misfeeds out of the supplied magazine, which was hard to seat. On a few occasions, a 220-grain round would be picked up out of the magazine but the tip wouldn’t elevate enough to enter the chamber cleanly, and the bolt would stop behind the jammed cartridge. We’d have to back the bolt out then use a pair of forceps to pry the round loose, then run the bolt behind the cartridge again while pressing down the others in the magazine.

As noted above, it comes with a 5-inch-long short-action aluminum scope rail installed, but the rail doesn’t have all 1913 slots — so a one-piece Picatinny base won’t fit. The matte-black anodized rail displays the Ruger Eagle logo and is mounted to the receiver with four Torx screws. All in, this is a big rifle, despite its short barrel length. Surprisingly, that’s not very heavy muzzle biased, with the balance point of the rifle without a scope occurring at the front of the magwell. But when you add the Surge can, all get very front heavy. You can do a ‘Best of Bolt Actions” without discussing the severe shortage of bolt actions to be found anywhere in 2021. If you’re alive, you’d be acutely aware of the shortage and non-existent supply. If you’re a journalist of any caliber you know the BS spread by these manufacturers and their third party distributors.

Its a fact bolt actions are missing from retail inventory – and can be found no where – except in the black market selling for 2-3 times MSRP. Ruger 10/22 Takedown 11100 22 LR
It looked more grey than green to us, and we found it very well mannered on the shooting bench. It featured one sling-swivel stud on the butt and one on the forend. On the bench, the pebbled grip on the stock was comfortable and positive. The 5-R rifling on the SPS-T is the same type as found on the company’s M24 SWS rifle barrel. There are five lands instead of six, as on a traditional barrel.
