We finished off our set-up with a new Sightron Big Sky 3-12 x 42mm scope with the new Sightron ballistic reticle, the HHR reticle, secured with Warne Maxima steel medium-height quick-release rings. Though scope comparisons are not the focus of this article, we were so impressed with the tracking and clarity of the Sightron Big Sky that it deserves a mention.
(Hurray!) It is nice to see an economy barreled action that doesn’t come with a dull, matte finish. No economy rifle with which I am familiar uses a controlled feed action; they are all push feed designs with bolt face, plunger ejectors. The best entry level designs use bolt head mounted claw extractors of the Weatherby/Sako/M-16 type that take a decent bite on the case rim. Others use inferior designs, such as a small hook (common in .22 rimfires), spring clip or bolt face sliding designs of the Savage type. Needless to say, these cheap extractors are more prone to failure, leaving a fired case in the chamber and hopelessly jamming the action in the field.

I’m a Remington fanboy from way back, but the quality of their latest offerings leaves a lot to be desired, same goes for browning. Honestly I’d be on the lookout for an older lightly used 700. The remington 700 only needs about $1K worth of work to be up to the steyrs capability. You must be drinking big greens koolaid and wipin your chin in thier full page ads.

Unscoped right out of the box, the Browning X-bolt weighed in at 7 pounds on the nose including its detachable box magazine. Browning X-Bolt or Remington 700
I’ve had my .308 X-bolt for a year now so the new hasn’t quite worn off of it but when I do get the itch to buy another caliber it will most likely be an X-bolt. MarineHawk- When I looked at the remington model 770’s I lost a lot of respect for the company. Then when I seen one fired at the range, and the shooter cycled the bolt and completely and unintentionally pulled the bolt out of the receiver, I lost the rest of what little respect was left. I personally really like the 60 degree bolt throw of the X-Bot. On your current rifle, you should put higher rings on it if your bolt is riding too close to the scope. The remington 700 mountain rifle tips the scales at just over 6 lbs, but the standard contour rifles are around 7.5 lbs.
