It keeps water out in normal hiking use, but will not work in a water sports environment. • Durably waterproof polyester film backing on three-layer cotton canvas for a highly water resistant construction. Burly haul-bag materials in a svelte, minimalist multi-pitch backpack—that’s what you get with Mountain Hardwear’s Multi-Pitch 25 Pack. This 1 lb 12 oz top-loader comes with a host of nifty, little features that we enjoyed on the outings we’ve taken it on thus far—from 12-pitch sport climbs to five-pitch ice routes.

For this pocket to be functional the main compartment of the pack must be fully open. Finally, a mesh side pocket for rock shoes or a small water bottle lives in the side of the pack for when it’s needed. This can be a nice feature for giving climbers a bit more space when the pack is loaded up.

The shoulder straps are also easily stowed in the hydration pocket, making this pack haul-friendly. The hip belt of the pack is attached with a simple girth hitch and is easily removed. The sternum strap buckle has a built-in emergency whistle.

Some of the gear will be reviewed using our 50 days/50 pitches criteria, in future print and online editions ofRock and Ice. For hauling, it’s nice to have the burl—the ballistics-nylon exterior and tough nylon shell. With my power drill and drilling tools inside, plus the usual array of bolts, I dragged the bag up grainy sandstone and over pointy granite, and left it none the worse for wear. Having the two haul loops was killer in terms of load distribution and clip-off ease once I had the bag up at the anchor. This is not the worst looking pack for trips around town or to the farmer’s market. Often, top straps are very useful on the approach and descent, but just add another step to opening the pack while we’re on route.

The main pack body is cotton canvas with an X-shaped ripstop grid. The bottom has some additional padding and is made of Kevlar. While we don’t do any specific durability tests as part of this review, our testers suspect this pack will hold up well to abrasion.

As a pack constructed with largely waterproof materials and techniques, this is a unique product in our test. Mountain Hardwear’s use of “OutDry” technology means that all the fabric and seams are waterproof, and durably so. However, seams of these other packs are vulnerable, and the coatings often wear off with use. The durable waterproof construction of the Scrambler 30 earns it our Top Pick award. Before you read on, be aware that the pack is not submersible.

This and the cotton fabric make this pack a poor choice for alpine climbing or other pursuits where getting wet is likely. We think this is a good pack for desert climbers who occasionally need to haul. Quick access guide book pocket and secure internal top pocket with key clip allow for easy organization and storage.

In this case, the top strap disappears into the hydration pocket when not needed. The back length of this pack is a bit less than some other models, shorter climbers take note. Taller climbers will experience no conflicts with helmets or chalk bags. From a hidden pocket on the side of the bag you can pull out a mesh pocket, made for storing extra water or shoes on long approaches. The pocket and closure configuration is essentially exactly the same. The Arc’teryx employs a zippered main pocket closure, which has its pros and cons. The back panel of the Mountain Hardwear Scrambler is lightly padded, lightly vented, and slightly rigid.

While cotton is a common fabric generally, we don’t see it as much in the outdoor gear world, and certainly not in backpacks. As it should, the award-winning Mountain Hardwear Scrambler 30 comes out near the top of our scoring rubric. The products that score better have more features are lighter weight or both.

Lightly packed, though, the side pockets hold what you need. While I love the size and look of the bag, my one dislike is the profile of the bag is pretty wide and large. I wore it to climb up a narrow chimney with two or three roofs, and I felt a little like an awkward turtle with the bag. If I’m planning on climbing something that skinny again, I’ll probably try to throw anything I want to bring up with me into a packable daypack with a lower profile. Altitude Sports’ Marketplace offers you a larger selection of sought-after products from curated brands. For comfort and durability, the Scrambler is right in the mix with the best of the best. Its simplicity is rugged and weatherproof, but it does not have many of the accessories and pockets that many hikers desire. The Scrambler 30 from Mountain Hardwear is a classic rucksack with some modern upgrades. Notably, the waterproof main bag is better in wet applications than any other pack we tested.

The Mountain Hardwear Multi-Pitch 20 is one of the pricier packs in our test. The cotton fabric also makes it less suitable for alpine applications. For climbers who need a 20L pack to be really versatile and want to take it into the mountains, it’s not the greatest value.
