Șase Moon Designs Flight 30 Review

The one benefit to the lid is that it holds a BV500 bear canister under it quite well. That said, this could still be easily achieved with less fabric. Sits high above the waist so as not to interfere with the natural movement of your hips.Vest harness keeps the pack close and secure.

It’s the perfect pack for runners, SUL backpackers, fast packers, and anyone looking for an efficient, small volume pack. The Flight 30 UL gives fast packers complete freedom on the trail. And still going strong though a bit big for my needs most of the time. Plenty tough enough without being overbuilt and heavier than necessary.

FRAME-LESS CONFIGURATION

The Flight Ultra is a 30L daypack – or multi-day pack if you’re into going super ultralight. Unlike the Flight UL, the Flight Ultra has a new large capacity bottom pocket made of woven nylon, making it even easier to stash and access items on the go efficient, small volume pack. Another noteworthy aspect of the Flight 30 that distinguishes it from most frameless packs is the adjustable torso length. The rear of the pack has four different Velcro attachment points to raise and lower the harness in accordance with the wearer’s size. A provided plastic tool aids in this process as the Velcro is strong and in a somewhat awkward position for full leverage. It is probably clear at this point that it is the vest harness that keeps the pack from being perfect for me.

The Flight 30 Ultra is the perfect pack for trail runners, mountain bikers, speed hikers, and anyone looking for a low volume. With multiple harness options and adjustable torso, this pack is sure to fit any body. The bag performed well in all aspects, be it fit/comfort, easing weight off of the shoulders and onto hips, or other things. The dry bag kept everything dry as expected in the fifteen hours out on the water. Any water the shoulder straps, hip belt, or other parts of the bag experienced did not seem to affect its performance, nor has the bag really changed colors from sun exposure.

Flight S-Curve Harness

The opening is no doubt there to ensure at least minimal ventilation and, of course, you shouldn’t be pitching into the wind. But that is sometimes unavoidable and wind direction can change. Getting in and out is straightforward, and the center pole doesn’t get in the way. The half of the triangular front mesh that zips open can be secured with an elastic loop as can the mesh itself.

Then again, those are times when I’d likely not put up a tent at all. A great design with loads of useful features, good looks and a durable outer for all kinds of adventures in the hills and mountains. Selling a SMD Flight 30 in size M/L with M hip belt for $100. Used for a couple of day hikes, one weekend, and a 6 day summit of Kilimanjaro.

Second, and more importantly, it lifts the edges of the tent body off the ground enough to expose the mesh between the floor and the walls. This is the key to getting the best ventilation possible, and therefore minimizing moisture. Though I’ve spent a lot of time with it, getting a good pitch out of the Lunar Solo isn’t easy. Sure, it’s a cinch to stake down a couple of corners, fit the center pole, and then stake down the rest. But achieving the delicate balance of tension and slack between the initial stake points and the guylined pole can be frustrating. UOG TOP PICK – Gossamer Gear’s G4-20 Ultralight 42L Backpack – We’ve singled out Gossamer Gear’s G4-20 as one of our top recommendations because it is amazingly lightweight for the 42L capacity.

Because of this, I wanted a pack that would carry a pound base weight comfortably. The Lunar Solo is a single-wall, silpoly, non-freestanding, pyramid-type tent with a sewn-in netting and floor. It boasts 26 square feet (2.4 square meters) of sleeping area and 8.5 square feet (.8 square meters) of vestibule area. The center peak height is 49”/1.2m, achieved with a hiking pole or, as is relevant in the bikepacking context, a single 49”/124.5cm segmented pole. I used Six Moon’s three segment carbon pole—sold for an extra US$35—where each segment is 17.5”/44.5cm and it fit easily into a medium sized Revelate Tangle frame bag. If you are a full-chested woman or broad-chested man, you might find the vest harness constricting.

Circumstances of Review

The stretchy angled side pockets are deep, designed to hold your water bottles safe and secure. The exterior front pocket is gusseted to add breadth to fit a tablet and stuff jackets into. I recommend this pack for lightweight backpackers and thru-hikers who have their eyes on weight and price.

VX21 has a 210d nylon face laminated to a polyester x-ply, a 0.25 mil PET waterproof film, and a 50d taffeta backing. It is a waterproof, durable, reasonably-priced material which probably helps to keep the cost of this pack lower than its DCF counterparts. VX21 is a popular pack material in the backpacking industry because it strikes a great balance between weight, durability, waterproofness, and cost. I also think that the blue and red VX21 packs offered by Six Moon Designs have a cleaner look than their 100d robic nylon packs. I wish the running vest-style harness had just one lycra pocket per side instead of four per side.

When moving fast I like to be able to access sunglasses, snacks, water, maps, and so on without taking my pack off. I will never use this pack for fastpacking, however, because it is simply too heavy (42.4 oz). There are plenty of frameless packs out there with running vest-style or running vest/fastpacking hybrid harnesses that weigh three-quarters or even half the weight of this pack. For shorter day hikes, opt for a smaller, simpler pack, but for longer treks, choose something that can stash lots of gear and handle a heavy load. There are tons of bags to choose from, but no matter what you pick, make sure it has features like adjustable straps and padding for your shoulders and back—they’ll make your hike much more comfortable.

That said, I enjoy the comfort of the running vest-style harness, and I think the clean aesthetic of the X-Pac VX21 is a big improvement over the 100d robic version of this pack. The frame is a bit small for folks with longer torsos, but should work really well for folks with torsos around 16”-18”. I honestly do think the Ursack would work way better with this pack. Needles to say, I will be using extremely lightweight and minimal gear, specialty nutrition, and I won’t be getting a lot of sleep for that excursion! If I can’t get all my essential gear to fit in the pack along with the bear canister… I guess I’ll have to find a different backpack. Maybe the Six Moon Designs Minimalist V2 because it features the same vest-style harness.

A Budget-Friendly, Lightweight Backpack

The Daybreaker Pack is lightweight and durable with some unique features and details. After a bout with cancer, Moak found that he could only handle a couple of hours of hiking before needing to stop due to severe back pain. A vest harness redistributed the weight he was carrying on his shoulders and hips to his core, allowing him to walk more upright. This additional support allowed him to hike longer distances with less pain.

The webbing strap that clips over the top of the bag is best suited for smaller items that won’t bounce out, like extra layers. I would never trust it to hold a bear canister in place, especially if running. I highly recommend using a Ursack Bear Bag, where permitted, with the Flight 30 if you need to carry a bear-proof container. This harness has straps on a backpack system to carry a 60L recreational barrel. While it appears to do it’s job well, I think Alton Brown would have something to say about it’s Unitasker attributes. To summarize, this bag is good for those who have many things they want to do.

Six Moon Designs Flight 30 Ultra Running Pack Review

The pack has various hip belt and shoulder strap sizes with adjustability to fit a cornucopia of people who may have hips and torso sizes that vary differently. Think the 5’3″ dude with Natty Lite belly who hasn’t seen his peeps for a few years. A small torso pack with appropriate shoulder straps will keep things comfortable, but the options of choosing a hip belt that fits can make or break whether the weight load is well supported on your hips. Generous shoulder strap pockets – Those familiar with Six Moon Designs packs will know that the designers are fans of finding usable space on the shoulder straps. The stretchy pockets on the Daybreaker shoulder straps are the best you can get without going full vest. They’re large enough to hold most smartphones, a GPS device, sunglasses, lots of snacks, or a small plastic water bottle.

SMD backpacks are simple, rugged, and have levels of adjustability that compete against just about anyone else. In addition to today’s Flex PR Plus Pack Rafting Backpack, they also make the Swift X, Swift V, and Flight 30 Ultra Running packs. But looking closer you’ll notice the small details that make this pack sturdy and versatile. There is an obvious attention to detail in the design such as the gusseted front pocket, the deliberate choice of buckles and even the strength of the webbing cord. There was a conscious effort to design the pack to suit a range of uses while keeping it looking sleek and modern. I received the Daybreaker pack just before the COVID-19 outbreak.
