You’ll want to replace them about every 50, ,000 miles. It could be more or less depending on the type of roads that you drive, and how long your commute is. Showing a lot of people doing the trd offroad suspension and/or fj lift. These are off the TRD sport which from my research is a rougher ride. There are many threads about this but here is my install. 2016 Tacoma TRD Off Road shocks front and rear on my gf’s WD.

Ensure that your tires do not contact the shocks before finishing your installation. The following gears, lockers and install kits are available for 1995 to 2004 Toyota Tacoma 2wd and 4×4 trucks. The Fox 2.0 IFP high performance shocks are for a go-fast attitude offroad, providing significant handling improvement on & off-road over typical street-shocks. These shocks excel in aggressive terrain and the dirt, and are a great performance upgrade over factory or Bilstein.

Will these tacoma parts fit 4runner?

Installing lower shock bolt.Slowly jack up the lower control arm to compress the suspension. Be sure the upper shock mount and spring are properly positioned while lifting. Re-attach the knuckle/hub to the lower ball joint using high-strength Threadlocker on the bolts before tightening to approximately 165 ft/lbs. Tundra rear shocks work on 4th gen 4runners, but I’m not sure what year Tundra. I wanna say you get quite a bit of travel but the only person I know running Tundra rears is Miah and he’s like 3 1/2″ lift on the rear.

If you continue driving around with bad struts or shocks then you’ll notice poor handling. You might also experience poor traction, body rolls, or poor steering. I have a set of rear shocks from my old Tacoma. For those of you running stock backspacing (4.75″), we have already seen customers running a 2.0″ shock with a small amount of clearance to the stock size tires. One of the key elements you can notice off the 2020 Toyota Tacoma is its towing capability.

Larger diameter shocks hold more oil and have more surface area so it’s no secret they have better heat capacity. But Fox and Icon do make Aluminum Bodies 2.0’s with small 5/8″ diameter piston rods, which help them hold more oil, and dissipate heat more quickly. Make sure that you also replace all worn parts that are connected to the struts. If you notice that the body roll is exaggerated as you turn, that means that you might have failed struts or shocks. When you replace your shocks, you’ll want to replace or rotate your tires as well. You might need to change your struts or shocks if you notice unusual wear.

You don’t know how much something costs because the pricing range is so vast. For example, a pair of pants can range from $20 to $200 depending on where you buy them. Similarly, additional goods like as shocks for 4th gen 4runner.

Best Shocks For 4th Gen 4runner In 2022 – Expert Review

2-3″ of lift is very common in 4Runners and, when used with bump stops spacer allows the use of 9.5″ travel shocks. The most simple version are 2.0 diameter direct replacement 2-3″ lift shocks which require 0.5″ bump stop spacers. The next option is to use 2.5 Tundra rear shocks which we re-valve, clock the reservoir fittings, and swap bushings to fit on the rear of 4Runners. For extreme off-roaders we can order custom length shocks which net you 11″ travel and require 2″ bump stop spacers. When using the extreme length shocks be sure to pair them with a spring capable of longer travel lengths or they may fall out.

I then sourced 2017 rear Tacoma TRD Off Road Toyota Bilstien shocks and bought new 2007 FJ Cruiser springs from RockAuto. All together, I had about $450 into the suspension in replacement parts. The Tacoma stuff was all found on craigslist locally. Each front shock absorber is part of a Macpherson strut assembly (a.k.a. coilover).

A New Tacoma Powertrain… We think

In an IFP shock there is a single cylinder containing the piston rod, oil, nitrogen, and Internal Floating Piston (IFP – which separates the oil & nitrogen). All of these items are in line which doesn’t leave much room for nitrogen, meaning the original 200 psi charge may exceed 600 psi when fully compressed. The 600 psi is actually not too bad, but once the shock starts heating up the oil expands and the pressures can sky rocket. The inline construction of IFP shocks is often done on an assembly machine which also seals the shocks, making them a sealed unit which can’t be rebuilt. After exploring this guide, you should have a better idea of when to replace shocks and struts on your 4Runner. Take your time diagnosing the problem, and making sure to buy the right parts from a reputable seller.

Keep in mind the front shocks lower mount on the 5th Gen is a touch wider, so will cause some challenge to install . It will raise the 4th Gen a touch, but not much, also the ride will be a little firmer. The FJC coils will give more lift than the 5th Gen TE IMO. However, I did see someone posted some new take-off 5th Gen 4R Trail suspension parts.

Standard Bilsteins are a popular replacement, but you can get the full gamut of shocks that will fit and do the job for you. The top of the rear shocks are tucked up inside of the frame rails and can sometimes be a bit difficult to access. With the nut removed, retrieve the washer and rubber bushing.

If you’re a light wheeler out exploring the backwoods with your 4Runner 2.0’s will handle the heat. If you’re blasting the dunes for an afternoon in your Tacoma then you should step up to 2.5’s for their ability to handle the heat. Skill Level – Difficult; requires jacking the Tacoma, removing suspension parts and loosening the rear axle, but does not require spring compressors. The ToyTec Boss uses adjustable coilover dampers, pre-assembled with Eibach springs, so no spring compressors are needed. Jeff Bathke offers a step-by-step guide with some helpful tips to replacing a CV axle in a 3rd Generation (’96 – ’02) 4Runner and a ‘95.5 – ’04 Tacoma. The timing belt found in 1st generation Tacomas, 3rd generation 4Runners, and T-100 Pickups require periodic replacement.

Off-Road ShockRecommendations

There are far too many options on the market, many of which are low-quality knock-offs. A lot of folks on this forum recommend swapping out the XREAS system for standard shocks. Apparently nothing special is needed to do this. You just remove the old shocks and the hydraulic lines that connect them. Then put in any of the many aftermarket shocks that will fit your year 4Runner — just like you would on any other vehicle.

There are a lot of options for 4Runner and Tacoma rear shocks depending on rear spring choices. Bolt in fitment is the only option for 4runners. If you’re lifting the rear of the T4R maximize the travel by using aftermarket springs, longer shocks, and bump stop spacers.

Tacoma Rear:

Lower shock mount bolt.Install a new lower shock bushing to the lower shock mount and install one of the new upper shock bushings as well as washers onto the top of the shock. Slide the new shock absorber and spring into position, then install the lower shock bolt. In some cases, the lower control arm may need to be pried down in order to relieve tension on the shock bolt. When it comes to oversize tires on Second and Third Gen Tacoma’s 285/70R16 is the most popular choice.

Fortunately, the shocks can be separated from the spring while the spring is retained in its perch by disconnecting a few suspension and steering components. Tacoma’s and 4Runners work well with 2.0 shocks for slow speed off-roading and about 5 minutes of hard run time on demanding terrain. The five minute run time is a rule of thumb and assumes the terrain is constantly rough and the speed is constantly high. With the increased oil capacity 2.5’s are good for about 15 minutes of hard run time before they start fading and life span gets shortened. Adding weight further reduces run time because it requires more damping which creates more heat.
